You mean, like they have left every other city that has tried this? They only returned to San Antonio after negotiating rules not requiring fingerprints.

Business travelers use uber because it's better, not because it's cheaper.

Truth. Cabs are disgusting, always take Uber. Only had one Uber that wasn't really clean and I've prob used them 100 times. Also, Uber drivers are pleasant where cabbies seem pissed to be interrupted in their break time.
Really???

The strangest thing to me in all this is the concept that the companies were bluffing despite the numerous examples of them leaving after similar regulations were passed.

Why on Earth would you think they were bluffing?

Both companies now have sent their drivers details of the shutdown tomorrow night.

They were not bluffing.

Uber and Lyft were always better options for me, marginally cheaper, and FAR more available.

Oh, the city made sure the ordinance was confusing enough to the general public, and they voted on saturday, so the union soldiers would all turn out while the rest of austin was enjoying their weekend.

Is there a story with actual information on this or does OP expect everyone to know what's happening in Austin?

They haven't left every city that required fingerprinting.

Outside of NYC, Lyft HAS left every city that required it. Uber left every one but Houston.

(NYC is a different beast. They operate branded cabs there, not TNC/rideshares.)

Was it dangerous? Cab companies obviously don't want to innovate.

Pass ****ty regulations that put a fence around a void capitalism was filling. Call on capitalism to fill void you just put a fence around.

Is there any empirical data suggesting that the fingerprint-based background check required by the city actually lead to "safer" outcomes than the background checks already used by Uber and Lyft?

Or is this (as I suspect) just a power play by overwhelmingly Democratic city govt types, backed by entrenched cab company and union interests?

Amazing what idiocy can be justified under the guise of "safety".
