Who took this survey exactly? I could think of a whole bunch before those two. Off of the top of my head from old TV shows alone, I would think of Walker, Texas Ranger or JR Ewing as being much more famous than those two..

Possibly, it's not the most popular according to people in each state but rather the most popular from each state based on all Americans.

So, that's why Aunt Bee is the most popular from west Virginia.

And it would explain why Beavis & Butthead are set for Texas. Beavis & Butthead definitely are known in the US... more than Hank Hill.
