How to sell a large amount of tools?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I need some help, everyone. I'm coming to the GB to get as many ideas as possible.

My dad has dementia and we need to divest of some things he has no use for anymore in order to pay for his care and living expenses. Specifically, he has an enormous amount of power tools, hand tools, and assorted other shop/construction equipment. We're talking retail value in the six-figures.

The problem we have is that the stuff is located in a rural area of California about an hour away from the nearest major city. My initial suggestion was to talk to some estate sale companies to see if they could put together a plan to sell it all, but everyone my mom talked to said they weren't interested in anything except antique furniture.

We are also looking at Craigslist, but the market in that area is pretty dry. I have considered having it all shipped to Houston because the market is much better here to get rid of it faster, but we incur shipping costs in the thousands of dollars and then storage costs. Realistically, I would have to hire someone to catalog it and list it for sale. That all eats into the money we need for my dad's care.

Ideally I would love to find someone willing to make an offer for all of it, but I don't see that happening, even if we get pennies on the dollar. We're running out of ideas, so if any of you fine people can think of something that might work, please share.

TIA

And you have no neighbors/friends/relatives in California that would be willing to drive it Houston?

What about flying someone out to California on your dime, having them load it all into a U-Haul and bring it to Houston? Is that cheaper?

Have her look for an auctioneer that will do it. I can't believe it wasn't easy to find someone. We do a ton of estate sales for deceased clients and tools and guns are the easiest items to move by far.

U-Haul doesn't have a truck big enough.

It sounds like you're going to have to eat the cost of brining it all to Houston but that it'll be made up in spades when you sell all this stuff.

How did he amass such a large quantity of tools?

You can rent any size truck you need including an 18 wheeler.

He was in the construction industry, and he was a hoarder. Tools were his fix. He's got five or six of everything.

Ritchie Brothers Auctions may be a good way to move the bigger and more valuable items easily. Then the smaller and hand tools could be moved to Texas to sell.

I'll fly out to Cali, load up the hand tools and take them to my house. You won't have to pay a dime.

RTT, your situation is surprisingly similar to what I went through with my emolyer in 2014. We closed our Bakersfield office and had to rid of all the shop tools and office and everything.

We made a hasty decision to ship it to CO. and deal with it at a later date. The items filled four 40' shipping containers. 6 months later, we opted to have a public auction. We estimated about $80k worth of equipment and tools, retail. (Not including retail cost of shipping containers)

We netted $20k from the auction. This included $10k for the 4 shipping containers themselves. So only $10k for the tools (for retail of $80k +). Auction attendance was about 100-150, so a decent turnout.

It took about 150 man hours to prepare the auction items; unloading from connexes, organizing, palletizing, and staging for auction day. Auction house took 15%. Restrooms for auction day, and a hired food truck. And a skid steer rental for 4 weeks.

At the end of the day, the proceeds from auction did not even pay for the auction prep itself, and what made it plummet into the red was the sipping costs.

$35k to ship the four connexes.

First suggestion, don't ship it! Find an auction house in the region to come in, stage it, auction it, and cut you a check. Or call a donation and tell them to come get it.

Otherwise you will go in the red so fast.

If I were you, I would check out Iron Planet.com. It is a nation wide/world wide online auction and the items can be sold from where they are located without having to be relocated.

In Texas, three online auction companies I've had good experience with are Swico, AuctioneerExpress.com, and Rene Bates. Contact these folks and ask if they can recommend an online auction company in California. These also allow sales without relocation to a central auction site.

And by all means, list the items on the Texags forum here.

Post on Outdoor Board, Automotive Board, and Home Improvement Board and you should be able to get rid of a lot just from those posters.

Have an auction. In this case an auction would be best. People will show. This is the best time to do it with all of the tv shows saturating the Auctions with more buyers.

The biggest issue we are facing with CL, eBay, and other auction sites is that it is extremely labor intensive to sell items. I would have to hire someone to catalog, photograph, and list everything because my mom can't do that and take care of my dad at the same time.

We are trying to find a more "bulk" solution to it.

Hiring an auctioneer means they will photograph and catalog and market. It's an expense, but well worth it if you find a good auctioneer.

Proxibid gives you the best of both worlds - a live auction and Internet bidders

Howdy I'm Lance Swigert with SWICO Auctions. Someone above recommended us. We can help you out with the tools by either selling them here in Texas or by helping find an auctioneer in CA.

What you need is time right?

A couple of things.

Divide and conquer and cull down. Divide tools in to groups:

Tools that can be used in construction (rugged tools). Tools that would be own by the average DIY (Home Depot grade tools).
Then the tough part. Tools that don't work or are junk.

I would then put together a close bid auction for the construction grade tools and the bundle of none working/crappy tools. Call all locale construction company's and advise then the tools are going up for sale.

Then for the DIY tools have a big sale over 1 or 2 days with all tools marked by a single value.

Objective: move the items as few times as possible, do not ship items anywhere, get rid of items ASAP.
