So wait...when Michael Young retired from baseball, he went straight into the collegiate presidency game?

Apparently he had more range than we thought.

He was always an avid reader. Not surprised he took so quickly to the academic game.

The new seal looks stupid on the Texas A&M System website. It is hard to believe that they are using this.

Usage of A&M System Seal

It's a little embarrassing that our leadership likes that look.

People complaining about the new seal obviously don't understand our #brand and the importance of consistent #visuals.

Why not just eliminate the bevel entirely?

Because decision-makers want to leave their mark here whether it's a good idea or not.

In addition to the removal of the bevel from f'n everything, I'd also like to see "Texas Aggies" back in the endzone. I'm surprised we don't hear "Now forming at the north end of Kyle Field, the Fightin' Texas A&M Aggie Band".
This is what I've heard from people in the know as well. People in the Marketing Department, both past and present, are more interested in building their own resumes and egos instead of what's in the best interest of the University. Every logo designed since the bevel (especially that godawful outline of the State of Texas with the bevel ATM awkwardly jammed into it) looks like they were done by Stevie Wonder, with absolutely no regard as to their visual appeal or artistic merit. They have been simply forced upon everyone, with the attitude "if you don't like it then it's too bad, because we're running things now" attitude.

After all, marketing is the endeavour of selling something to people that they don't want or like in the first place. What better way to do that by limiting their choices to begin with. And once you got it printed on every letterhead, painted or carved upon every available surface, what are you going to do about it? Spend the GNP of a small European nation to undo it all? Not going to happen, and these people full well know that it's not. We're all just along for the ride, so sit back, shut up, and enjoy it like the chumps they take you for (and learn never to question the judgment of your betters ever again).

It starts at the top.
And then the people under them have the same mindset.
And it trickles down.

It's also not limited to A&M. This s*** goes on everywhere. Particularly state institutions.

[Borrowed from The Dog Lord]

Just so everyone gets the discussion, here are the equivalents of what we are doing:

They are both orange and ugly, but one says "academic institution" and the other says "hill country cabin decoration."

Battalion article from earlier today...

Student Senate to voice results of referendum at BOR meeting

quote:
The meeting will also determine the which seal is placed on diplomas. The proposal to put the former seal on diplomas will be included as a consent item. According to an email sent to the student body from president Michael Young, items in the consent agenda are typically approved in bulk without debate.

"In an ideal world, the old seal would be the only seal, but we are very pleased with President Young and the Board's decision to use that seal for the diplomas," Benigno said.

Mitchell on the other hand, said it is important that the Student Senate address issues one at a time.

"The most prevalent use of the seal is for the students graduating in December it is important to make it on their diploma and every diploma afterwards," Mitchell said. "The Board has been very gracious and receptive in conversation with student government about this issue, and I think it's important we take this victory and cherish it. But, it's not necessary time to give up either."
