John Kruk. When told by a fan that athletes aren't as fat as he is his response was "mam, i'm not an athlete, i am a baseball player".
That comment gave hope to old jocks everywhere

I don't see how Gilbert makes it through an entire game.

Andre the Giant: 7'4" 520 pounds

Andre the Giant was an actor, sports entertainer, whatever.

Fridge and Gilbert come close, but they fall short.

The answer, as far as people that you've actually heard of, is Phillip Finch.

Maybe Aaron Gibson? He's listed at 375, but when he was with the Cowboys early last year, he was the first NFL player whose official weight was listed at > 400 lbs. Unofficially, I've read where he has been 425+.

Nice work. I forgot about him. He's very close too. Mark Henry weighed 412 pounds.

Phillip Finch still has him beat.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily say that weight alone would be an indicator of who the fattest athlete was. Tab Thacker, aka Phillip Finch, is without a doubt the fattest. His weight was around 450 or so. I couldn't find a picture of him from his wrestling days (I believe it was N.C. State where he was a national champion), but I found one picture of him from his acting days. He's on the bottom right...

So Special, now I guess you are going to tell me that wrestling is fake. (I know it is... that's a joke!)

While I agree it is sports entertainment and not a sport per se, I gotta fall on the side of wrestlers as athletes. Well, maybe not full fledged athletes, but definitely on that side of the spectrum. With entertaininer being on the other side. Besides, Andre was featured in Sports Illustrated in the largest feature they have ever published. A feature in SI kinda blurs the lines IMO.

I won't necessarily disagree with that, because they are very athletic people. However, I will fall back on my comment that weight does not necessarily equal fat. Tab Thacker has a lot more fat on his body than Andre did. He just wasn't a 7-footer, so the weight was far less.

I saw Chris Taylor wrestle against the USSR superheavyweight champion in Oklahoma City in 1971. The Russian PICKED HIM UP, THREW HIM TO THE MAT, AND PINNED HIM in about 20 seconds.

Ted van der Parre was World’s Strongest Man winner in 1992. 7’0’, 400 lbs.

Torfi Olafson, is a current World’s Strongest Man competitor. 6’6’, 400 lbs.

J.R. Richard had hit 400 lbs when he was found homeless in Houston a few years ago. He played at 6’8” and about 280 or so. I saw him pitch in the minors (OKC 89ers were a farm team of the Astros then) in the early 1970s. He could throw the ball THROUGH the backstop. His fastball was better than Billy Wagner’s, but I've sat behind home plate to watch him pitch and if that’s only 101-102 mph, Nolan Ryan probably would hit only 90 mph or so on HIS best day.
