FOUR THIN INCHES
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I got splashed with some hot metal that burned through my jeans, then rolled down my leg into my boot and settled on my foot a couple days ago. It didn't hurt really until today, it started to swell and feels tender. Normal or maybe infected?

Yes, it looks a little infected.

1. Scrub clean with a clean washcloth, antibacterial soap, and water.
2. Let it air out as much as possible.
3. Apply Neosporin or other antibacterial ointment and wrap in gauze (if possible) if you need to put shoes on.
4. ...
5. Profit and have a non-infected foot.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, but I've personally had 2nd and 3rd degree burns. What I wrote above is basically what I had to do, except I had a Rx-only ointment and a regimen of oral antibiotics to go along with it. Mine looked waaaaaaaay worse than yours.

Scrubbing it clean is going to hurt.

Damn right it's going to. Worst pain I've ever sat through was having infected flesh scraped away from a 3rd degree burn without any sort of pain killer.

3rd deg burns tend to destroy the nerve endings, causing no pain

As a kid I lost my pinkie toe initially to a lawn mower blade and subsequentally to a soccer ball.

Now THAT'S a cool story, bro.

Have you ever seen that one episode of Mad Men?

Some folk'll never lose a toe, then again some folk'll.

Definitely infected based on that picture. Have a short fuse to go see a doc for antibiotics +/- drainage. It may get better on its own, but it could go south in a hurry if you're not careful.

And I still don't have feeling in parts of my foot. Maybe the areas that were only 2nd degree burns were what hurt so ****ing bad. I was doing my best not to look at it when they were doing it, so I couldn't tell you exactly which part of my foot they were going to town on at a given instant. What's your point?

His point is that he read that 3rd degree burns don't hurt and is parroting it for everyone to hear.

The 3rd degree burn itself may not hurt, but the surrounding tissue where its transitioning from 3rd degree burn to healthy tissue will certainly hurt. That surrounding tissue is probalby where the actually infection was as well.

So yeah, there is usually plenty of pain to be had when you get a 3rd degree burn, especially when its infected.

I cleaned it with disinfectant and put some ointment on it last night and again this morning and put some gauze and a bandage on it. It's doing much better.

Good. I would only bandage it if you have to put shoes on. If you're around the house and barefoot, let it air out. Bacteria love moisture. That's not a huge area of your foot though, so it's probably not as important as if it were a larger surface area.

Have you thought about suicide? It should clear up that infection problem lickity split.
