A huge breed dog was playing catch with the neighborhood boys and one boy threw a football. That big dog took off to catch the ball and I saw him running into the street so I came to a complete stop. The dog ran into my car and dented the door in enough we could see the internal support frame print on the exterior of the door. Two of the boys ran to my car, one ran into the house...the dog was fine. Some woman ran out and was checking the dog then came to the car and was yelling, YOU SHOULD PAY CLOSER ATTENTION AND SLOW DOWN THAT COULD HAVE BEEN THE KIDS INSTEAD OF OUR PRECIOUS PET. All three of the boys were yelling NO MOM this lady was STOPPED COMPLETELY, Buster ran into her car and dented the door, LOOK! Then she said, Oh okay you kids stay in the yard and called the dog to come inside with her....not one single word to me but the boys all said Sorry.

So you were expected to be responsible but the owners of the dog are not supposed to be responsible for the dog's action.

. All I saw was a picture of a dog and the word "ACCEPT", but I came up on the sign too fast to read it. I made a mental note to see what the deal is the next time I pass by this particular stretch. Fast forward, I kept forgetting to slow down at this stretch and finally pull off the road today to check it out.

You paint a very unnecessarily thorough picture.

If I'm driving my car in your yard and hit your dog, you have a case against me.

If your dog is in the road and I hit it, you are paying to fix my car.

Yep, it was a fairly ridiculous piece of writing by me.

Won't someone think of the (furry) children?

But that dog was part of the family! We loved that dog like a child!

Really? You let your children play in traffic? Your dog plays in the street? I drive in the street. I'm not going to swerve to hit it, but I'm not going to take evasive action to miss it either. I'm sure as heck not going to end up in the ditch or flipped or wrapped around a tree because I tried to avoid the pet you let roam free.

You drive over 30 mph where there are children? Isn't the speed limit 30 or less in residential areas?

HAVE YOU NOT SEEN PET CEMETARY? LITTLE KIDS CAN RUN FASTER THAN A GROWN MAN GIVEN A HEAD START!

When I was 15 or 16, I ran over something pretty large at night on a FM road. Turned back around to see what it was and found a dog that often chased vehicles lying there dead. No need to check for a pulse or call a vet... I got him in the head.

16 yr old Casey Table Tennis struggled with the moral dilema for a bit and eventually decided to do the right thing. Then, I needed to work up the courage to go to the house and tell this family (4 kids) that I ran over their beloved pet. Making it worse, I knew the family, and they would always know I did it.

About 20 minutes after the incident I finally knock on the door. Hillbilly dad comes to the door sauced up like usual. I tell him "Mr. Hillbilly, I have some bad news, I ran over Red. I feel really bad and wanted you to know what happened". He asked if I did it on purpose, and goes on for a bit really making me twist, Finally he laughs and says "Don't worry about it young Table Tennis, that F***** has been laying there for a couple of days and the county won't pick it up. I guess I ought to move it before anyone else comes up here at night and gets themselves shot".

I think long and hard about doing the right thing now.

Hit a dog than ran in the road right in front of me. The owner was there and saw it. Dog was hurt but alive. I pulled over in a parking lot and ran over offering what I could do to help. The owner was shocked I stopped and came back and said it was his fault not keeping the dog secure and thanked me for stopping. In the end I think the dog had a broken leg so it should've been ok.

Etiquette is, assuming the animal is dead, to move it safely out of the way, check for its tags, and make a reasonable effort to locate the owner.

Obviously if injured, you head to the vet.
Or just back over it and finish the damn job.

True pet owners will likely respond this way. Thanks to sue happy Obama-America, most people won't.

I wasn't necessarily responding to the OP. They were talking cattle when I posted.

If you think Americans weren't sue happy before Obama, then you are horribly, horribly mistaken...

From a legal and technical standpoint, if the animal causes damage to your vehicle and the animal is owned, the owner of the animal can (and probably should be) held responsible for any damages to the vehicle. If if the animal is unowned and obviously injured, I prefer to call Animal Control or the local humane organization to pick up the animal. If it is a wild animal, I carry a gun in my vehicle in the event the animal needs to be.....
