Has he ever invested in any companies?

I don't think so.

Saw him help out a young black teen who wanted to market his line of bow ties. That's it! Didn't even give him money!

You don't even watch the show. You've just seen it a few times.

When I was in Korea many years ago, I was surprised that For Us By Us apparently extended to that demo. Exact same ad campaign, but the "Us" was Koreans. That's some real community pride by the creator.

He makes deals all the time. He is just a bit limited in what he can offer as a partner. He is good with licensing deals. Cuban has been pretty picky lately too.

After they kicked off the dude that wouldn't make deals a few years ago and replaced him with Cuban, I think there has been a decent mix of all of them pulling the trigger. It seems like Cuban does the most, while the bald a-hole does the least (he'll offer, but it's usually not a good one).

Honestly, the couple times I watch, it usually seems like the female CEO is the one that doesn't ever pick anything.

Unless it's about a new style of shoe or a purse or something, amirite?

Do they ever follow up on whether the sharks made money or not?

I think Paddle Board may be Cuban's most successful investment.

I think the royalty deals are better over all. They are a bit more expensive at first but cost much much less over all.

Why does he have to be a black guy?

Why can't he be the fashion guy, the FUBU guy, or the guy with big funny looking tie?

OP is obviously racist.

O'Leary's roll on the show really isn't to make deals, as he is primarily the facilitator that is supposed to keep the show moving and 'stir the pot" with his comments. I read an article a while back about the show which was pretty interesting and dove into all of their roles. He has had some experience hosting other shows which is why they picked him. I've never seen it but apparently he wears an ear piece so he can sync up with the producers during pitches about how to make the pitch progress and which direction to take it.

No. They frame the show to be about the companies that are pitching, not really about the sharks. The only updates you get are a little 2 minute spot on each episode about how omgamazing the companies are doing after shark tank.

They are way too hard on royalty deals. They've got everyone conditioned to think that royalty deals = bad which is dumb. The thing that bugs me about those is that they're always into perpetuity and they're almost always a fixed dollar amount instead of percentage.

Yeah, to be clear about my comment, I'm not necessarily knocking his royalty deal offers. I think some of his royalty offers are probably a better fit in many cases, although they are harder for the business owner to digest in the show's format. Especially given many of them are tiered depending on other factors (like recouping his initial investment) and/or combined with some sort of debt offer. Overall, he has a tendency to make more complex offers that are tough to evaluate properly given the format.

My initial comment was more geared to the fact that I think he tends to be more aggressive in attacking the overall valuations than many of the other sharks.

Black people hate water, so I don't understand why he's anywhere near a shark tank in the first place. /histag

I actually enjoy the show, from a semi-reality show perspective it's far from the worst. I don't know much about how it works though. Do the producers allow some kind of due diligence beforehand, so there are hurdles that are cleared during the application process?

I could definitely see wanting to be on the show. Many times, a company takes off just by being on TV and having immediate backing from a person with connections to retail or the right distribution channel.

I guess it depends on what you need. If you need cash, I can definitely see being hesitant to take a deal that immediately starts taking cash out of the business. A cumulative dividend would be better IMO, but that would add even more complexity to the deal.

The deals we see on TV aren't binding. There's usually a couple of month vetting process that happens by the shark afterwards before they really sign on the dotted line. Only about half the deals really go through.

Makes sense. I figured there was some level of investigation on one end of the deal or another.
