I'm not a lawyer, nor am I well versed in labor law, but this sounds borderline against the law. Isn't there legal protection for people that miss work due to illness/injury?

You're talking about FMLA, which doesn't apply to all businesses (but most) and doesn't take affect until 12 months of employment, assuming you worked at least 1250 hours in those 12 months.
