...but the NAACP is all about equality and celebrating your culture? Gotcha.

http://www.click2houston.com/education/2493104/detail.html

quote:
OAKLEY, Calif. -- Lisa McClelland says she isn't a racist. She says her campaign for a Caucasian Club at her California high school is a move toward diversity, not bigotry.

She says everyone is invited -- and nobody will be excluded.

McClelland's ethnic background includes American Indian, Hispanic, Dutch, German, Italian and Irish. She says she and her friends feel slighted by other clubs at Freedom High School in Oakley, such as the Black Student Union and the Asian Club.

McClelland says she's collected 245 signatures of support from students, adults and others since announcing her plans three weeks ago.

One person who won't be signing up is Darnell Turner, first vice president of the local chapter of the NAACP. Turner says he thinks the club will create racial tension.

Why not just go ahead and start up a local chapter of the NAAWP?

Our country is going to crap with all this PC this and PC that, why the hell do we need Black Student Association, Asian Student Association, Hispanic Student Association, etc. Answer so everyone can play the victim role when appropriate because they feel left out of the University or High School social scene and acadmia. Turn The Freakin Page Already with this crap we are almost in year 2004! End of my rant...

Ah. The very original "White Victim" shot whenever the double standard of culture based clubs is pointed out.

Can't disagree without being the "white victim" guy.

Wow, you're pulling the "how original" card on a thread devoted to "Why can't we have a WHITE club, I mean, they have black and asian clubs!?!?!?!" thread. Nice work, soagl

I never said there should be an all white club, I said there was a double standard when it came to acceptance of culture or raced based clubs.

Sorry to throw facts on your little shot.

I think the other main point is that by creating racial clubs, the "racial" folks are actually isolating themselves from the "mainstream." The same thing is happening all over the country as colleges and universities are embracing so-called diversity by creating race-specific dorms and unions. The outward sentiment is to make special accommodations for those who may be otherwise discriminated against, but the truth is that these people are being segregated once again, this time by choice. I know I'm stating the obvious but it just kills me when individuals claim that they are judged, discriminated against, blah blah blah, and then choose to isolate themself and demand special treatment. arrrgh.

I know so many people who adopt the "color blind" mentality, but it seems that often it's the people of color who only want to fit in when it's convenient for them. Flame away, JMO.

And my comments were about this thread in general. Same old ****, 15th verse.

As far as your comments, on face, sure, they're right. But that's denying the history of this country and all of the social contexts in which racism has/has not/does/doesn't happen(ed) in this country. As best as I can tell, your comments are not more thoughtful or "fact"-driven than any of the other very unoriginal "Why can't we have a white club?" comments that always seem to stream throughout threads like this.

Yankee- I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, but do try to look at it from the perspective of someone who isn't white. Why are they "self-segregating" themselves?

The reality is that minorities many times don't know where white people are coming from, and white people don't know where minorities are coming from. Therein lies the real problem, IMO. And unfortunately, given this country's history (and no, I don't simply mean slavery or even Jim Crow), its difficult to get both sides to come to the table and have a rational discussion.

Sorry to deviate from the very insightfull and well thought out "circle jerk" argument that you opened with.

I'll try to remain as mature and eloquent in the future when forming mine.

Oh, I agree with you on that Bobcat, it's just frustrating a lot of times when (for example) people of a certain race wish to have a convention or something and then exclude whites (or another race). I mean, isn't the WHOLE point that we should all be together? The claim is always intimidation or something like that. Should'nt we be beyond that? I mean I know that there are still racist whites in this country but let's focus on the "average" guy who would like to be proactively involved. Nope, unless your name is Bill Clinton, you're no friend to us!

Call me idealistic, but I grew up in a community that was fairly 'color blind' and moving to the south was a racial eye-opener. I can see that there are reasons that people of color would feel "more comfortable" with their own kind, but that brings us right back to the argument of why anyone is trying to bring this country together in the first place.

I really mean this; I'm not just trying to troll here, btw.

I didn't say that you did. I was making a comment on the maturity and eloquence of yours and the irony in the fact that you said mine lacked thought.

YankeeAg00-

Ethnic minorities are by definition excluded from the mainstream so long as they retain the traditions and cultural accoutrements that derive from their ethnicity. Should they decide to drop these and adopt the cultural values of the mainstram, then they are a person of color in the mainstream, not an ethnic minority. It's ironic because usually these are the folks put on display and quoted as supporting and end to "reverse" discrimination, but the reality is that they don't experience the same hostility because they've adopted mainstream culture in preference of their cultural heritage. Mainstream culture (i.e. the beliefs, traditions, and values) of American culture have always been WASP. It is ridiculous to talk about a "white club," not because white kids shouldn't be allowed to celebrate their heritage (to the contrary, they should study and understand it in the context of the rest of the world's cultures), but because it is a superfluous concept. There is already a "white club": it's called mainstream culture.

As long as there are double standards for races, do you think we can achieve a color blind society?

right, okay, jkotinek, I really do see your point. HOWEVER:

I guess my little hang up is the point that what one person perceives as "a colored person in mainstream culture," another might perceive as "normal." That's all. Mainstream culture isn't WASP anymore. Anyone who thinks that is pretty cynical if you ask me.
