One got me in the shoulder when i was a kid. I screamed like a girl both from the pain and because it looked like some sort of demon worm. The sting hurt and then it made my lymph nodes hurt from the poison. Didn't last more than a couple of hours but freaked me out.

Stepped on a cow killer barefoot once. Hurt like hell but not as bad as the asp.

A fuzzy caterpillar fell on and stung me on the hand when I was in the 6th grade. It looked like I'd been burned and to this day, that part of my hand is a darker brown circle. It hurt like a *****.

I tried to play with that "cute fuzzy catipillar" when I was a little kid. They aren't cute.

UPDATE: Throbbed and hurt like hell most of the day yesterday, with the painful area gradually getting smaller and smaller. By bedtime it had subsided to the point where it only hurt if I put pressure on it at the exact location of the bite. This morning there's no pain but most of the area that hurt yesterday is now annoyingly itchy and still red.

It's not a big deal.

It's weird to me how many people think the big black caterpillars with the orange stripes are asps. We played with those all the time.

Yes. Accidentally smashed one between my forearm and the armrest on my truck. Damn near went to the ER. Started having radiating chest pain and got pretty hard to breath. Then after about 15 minutes it went away.

Do they like trees or something? That would explain why I'd never heard of them growing up.

Yes, they are primarily found around trees. They are mostly going to be east of I-35.

Another name is tree asp.

I used to work at a Boy Scout camp that had a huge infestation of them one summer. We had to tell the leaders when they checked in about how painful the asps so they could go make sure their boys did't play with the fuzzy caterpillars. I remember one group of bad little kids would put a bunch of asps in a cup w/ a lid and would dump them on other kids they didn't like. They basically turned those little asps into weapons.
