So when did large and numerous field props become a thing for HS marching bands?

They didn't die, they just weren't allowed to be on the squad anymore. Stunting is dangerous for unborn babies.

It started a long time ago. We had props like those when I was in HS 10 years ago and a lot of other bands were doing it.

I can't believe you guys spent $13k on props though. I mean, wow.

This is why the HS Bands that I have directed have always been and always will be traditional Military. Would the FTAB have props? Most of the times that I have seen a HS band with props it was to enhance the program, but many times they are used to take your eyes off of the fact that the band can't march. One of my students at Area contest last year commented that marching band is becoming a One Act Play with music. Went to a contest in Louisiana a few years back and they brought a trailer to our buses and asked for out props. He didn't understand why we didn't have any.

If they were too stupid to know how to fix that problem they were probably too stupid to cheer.

I go my jacket my sophomore year because I had qualified for UIL state my freshman year and participated in 5 plays that same year.

They were Hispanic, so they didn't really believe in that kind of thing.

If you have to buy your letter jacket, it probably means you weren't intended to have one. :cough:clubsports:cough:

I got my letter jacket as a sophomore for making varsity in basketball.

This is truly a testament to how ridiculous my school's existence is.

Not uncommon at all these days from what I have been told. Out band booster budget has passed the six figure mark and that is small potatoes compared to some other schools. We hosted an early "preview" competition with 20+ bands and the boosters handled everything from the gate to the concessions and pocketed the profits. It seems like we cleared over $30K in concessions alone that day.

My cousin plays in the band at one of the high schools in Pearland and they use"props" (really just 3/4 platforms for certain band members to play solos on), but I have been to one of her competitions and some of these schools go nuts with props. One school had 3 huge dome things they rolled out into the field that resembled Daleks (Doctor Who theme) with lights, another one actually had a prop castle for their romeo and juliet theme. Crazy stuff.

Haltom HS advanced to state and they have a dragon-themed show with crazy props:

Jesus... I had no idea it had gotten so out of hand. I went to a HS football game to see my wife's cousin's HS band and all they had were some nifty colored slats that would open and close to go from white to different shades of blue. The other school had a bunch of white painted picket fences and some panels, but I didn't think it was all that excessive. Their fundamentals looked like ***, so I guess the props really are there to hide that stuff.

We had some large props when I was in HS but never anything that serious. The biggest ones we ever had were my freshman year, and they were just giant panels painted to look like stained glass since we had a hymnal theme. I don't think we spent more than $1-2k between the 5 of them and we considered that expensive.

I will repeat what I said earlier...

Can we go back to playing great music, marching in crisp formations, and making fun of the male woodwind players, please?

it was a simpler time then...

We had 3-4 my senior year of HS. Cloth on a 1" square tubing frame, welded into 2-3 pieces, then put together with PTO pins for easy disassembly. Think we had fewer my Junior year, sophomore year was a big fabric painting. This was all actually down hill from the previous years' props, they took up most of a donated 18 wheeler trailer to store. PVC polyhedrons, why they kept them put together rather than unbolting them and taking up maybe 3 feet of the trailer always puzzled the hell out of me.

Only props I've ever seen and liked were ~2000 someone (Duncanville?)had huge gears that were ~8' tall. Color guard actually rolled them around the field and would have one person rolling it while another would stand on the gear teeth to ride up to the top as it was rotating. I think they stacked/leaned them up into a little mountain and had their soloist play from on top of the mountain. They were props that were actually useful. Most of the other crap I see doesn't really add anything to the performance.

For Predmid, here's the Nederland High School Band. Their show includes "Trombone King" and "St. Julian" (a couple of marches I haven't heard performed by a marching band since I was in high school, back when Ford was president)

You are right. I qualified for one junior year after my stellar TAKS scores, but I already had my letter in bowling. I technyically could have had two letter jackets.
.
No, you qualified for ONE jacket IF your school district recognized bowling as a legitimate "sport" UIL or otherwise, then you would have qualified as having lettered. Then IF a qualifying TAKS score is also recognized by your district, you would have earned a second letter, but not a second jacket. Normally, the "Letter", say a "V" for Victoria High would have Two slashes at different places on the "V". Beside one slash would be a small bowling pin (as an example) and next to the other slash would appear the letters spelling "TAKS". As you earn more letters for each, more slashes are added up to four. All that being said, my family owns one of the largest custom patch manufacturers in the country and we have NEVER heard of bowling or TAKS scores earning a letter or letterman jacket. I'd like to know what school district this is, so we can contact them. We currently have Contracts with the two largest jackets (sales) companies in Texas. These are the folks that come in and measure a student for their jacket. We do business (walk in sales for patches) and have customers from Denton/Gainesville/Muenster Tx to Brownsville Hannah/St. Joe drive to Victoria to purchase our patches. Again, please let me know which school district you are in, we'd like to contact them with some patch ideas. thanks.

One year, The Victoriadores (dance team) spent almost $4000 on one stage background for competition. The director was not satisfied with the dance that went with the background and cancelled THAT number before anyone other than her parents ever saw it! Some years, When the Vdores travelled to competition, they used an 18wheeler or large horse trailer to haul their props.

I graduated five years ago from Allen so I got my jacket seven years ago. I'm sure things have changed since then.

Former band director. It started in the mid-90s. I went to every state comp from 94-98 and it grew each year.

Glad I got out of that business.

Tree Hugger,

I saw y'alls show at HEB and UIL Region 5 contests and yeah those multi-armed things looked liked a royal pain in the ***. I feel for y'all. I have several kids from my Sunday School class in your band I thought the show was great this year.

BTW - we have props this year as well - more modest than previous years thank God - here is my son's band (I'm sure you'll instantly recognize it from this year).

According to the comments on their Facebook page they picked up a Div. I rating at UIL and bested Port Neches Groves (which does the DCI/BOA stuff)

There are several military style HS bands that routinely do very well at UIL. However, I can't remember any of them advancing to state.

I got my letter jacket back in 97 for football. Not sure the band vs bowling discussion deserves much merit.

UIL band competitions have ruined high school halftimes. No more fight songs or marching. Just all of this UIL slow song, dancing flag girls with stupid props putting the fans to sleep....

Kramer, there are many HS Military style bands that have advanced to the State Marching Contest; Hardin-Jefferson, Kingwood, Buna, Tenaha, Carlisle, Henderson to name a few. I took the Timpson Band to state in 2009 and did fine. Overton won the State Marching Contest in Class A about 10 years ago. Spring Hill will be there this year. If judges at Area do their job correctly, it is not uncommon for a military band to make State. I am currently retired (tired of all the 'nonsense') but do miss teaching.

No doubt there are some bands that march 6 to 5, but not many rock the old style uniforms that band did.
