Anybody else think it's completely overrated?

Oh, but the port isn't too bad...

their port is great, their reisling (sp?) is good too. I don't think they are overrated, they are not too expensive and they are in BCS, I think the next closest winery is in Fredericksburg.

Support Texas wine!

Oh I don't have a thing against Texas Wine... but what's closer, Fredericksburg or New Braunfels? (Never looked)

I like their Riesling, but I've had better...

Haak Winery in Santa Fe isn't too bad, either.

There are also winery's outside of Austin. But I am not a fan of their wine. The Guwertaminer(sp?) is pretty good. I haven't had the Port yet.

I prefer the Llano Estacado Texas Red. I also like the Val Verde stuff, but you have to go to Del Rio to get it.

Remember back in high school when you went to Sonic and got a large ice, then got a bottle of Strawberry Hill and poured it in the cup of ice? Did anyone else ever do that?

they are probably "overrated" because every brand new 21 year old in BCS goes there for a wine tasting and is **surprise** given something of higher quality than boxed franzia wine or arbor mist. you have to think about who you are getting your comments from

there are better wines (although i have to agree-- the port is something to cheer about) but for the close proximity and atmosphere messina hof is great.

I don't think their vintage is that good honestly. All of their wines are a little on the dry side, not as full as I thought they'd be. And even though you said the price isn't bad, I think it's overpriced for what it's worth, especially since it's local.

people will buy it because it's local. they can afford to be overpriced.

and also, they put bonfires and reveille's on their bottles, so people will pay whatever the asking price is.

Llano Estacado is the best but as others have said the reisling from Messina isn't too bad

I've never really been a fan of Texas wines... Canadian Ice Wine is the best friggin thing ever (Although it's a desert wine, and extremely sweet).

Are you talking about issenwein? I've heard it's REALLY expensive and hard to come by. What's the Canadian stuff priced at?

Completely agree AustinAg!

It's the same idea as the German issenwein, and there is an American version (usually a "late harvest muscat wine" or something like that) as well. There are very specific regulations for something to actually be called an "ice wine" in Canada, but basically it's when the grapes are harvested and pressed while still frozen. You get a very concentrated bit of juice from each grape. This results in a syrupy sweet dessert wine. Yum...i'm craving some right now!!!

A decent icewine can be gotten in for about CA$30-40/small bottle (not sure of the size, but it's not 750ml) A nice late harvest riesling or muscat is usually US$15-$20.

My Mom was actually telling me about ice wines the other day, so I was curious...

So, despite that they're seasonal, can you still get them at the grocery store, or do you have to go to a liquor store?

The best wine advice I ever got was from the head vintner at a winery in the Napa Valley. He said "Drink what you like and don't let someone else tell you what you like."

So try several different one's till you find one that you like. That's the fun of being an amateur wine drinker.

I personally like Massena Hof wines for the most part. The Cab is good for a regular table wine. I'm a fan of reds so that is mostly what I drink. I also like their Merlot.

Typical of your soon-to-be-Dallas ass to be pimping Canadian wine, Austin.

Oh...And Messina Hof, regardless of how their wine tastes, is gay.
