My parents used to live in McCamey before I was born and always insisted on driving through there when we would go to Colorado...total sh*thole of a town

Start driving west of I-35 for about 45-90 minutes (depends on if you're starting from San Antonio South or Dallas/Fort Worth.)

That's the start of "West Texas".

Keep going until you hit the edge of El Paso.

That's the end of it.

El Paso is an entity unto itself.

A reasonable definition.

Looking at a map, I'd say anything West of a line starting at Wichita Falls, SSW through Brownwood, continuing through Mason, and then SW near Junction to Del Rio.

But that's just me.

Wichita Falls-Abilene-San Angelo-Sonora-Del Rio and all points westward.

And fwiw, my definition of West Texas is the area of Texas that they don't look at you funny if you wear spurs or chaps into a convenience store or bank or whatever.

Are the panhandle, big country, permian basin, and big bend areas all distinct in their own way? sure. But to me they all have the same West Texas way of life.

But again, that's just me.

I'm from East Texas, so anything half and hour or more West of 35 has always been "West" Texas.

School probably taught us this, but who cares about that.

Start driving West on IH 10 from San Antonio. When you see the first oil well, you are in West Texas.

IMO West Texas is everything West of Brownwood. That classification is based on climate, population density and the general attitudes of the inhabitants. People in both the Big Country and Concho Valley consider themselves to be from West Texas.

San Angelo is closer to central Texas than anything that claims to be (Brownwood, Waco, Temple, etc.)

i-35 seems to be more of a cultural dividing point than geographical.

Anything west of where I currently am.

Similarly, anyone north of where I currently am is a yankee.

Central Texas is not the geographic center. West is bigger than East.
