So I'm looking at putting in an outdoor kitchen. Just got a Big Green Egg for Christmas (haven't used it yet). Was originally thinking about a medium-sized gas Grill (Weber, Fire Magic, etc.) plus a large BGE. Anyone have both? For those that do, if you were starting over, would you do both or just do two BGE's? I need the convenience of cooking relatively quickly on a weeknight plus the ability to smoke, grill, etc. for groups of 10-15 on the weekends when time is less of a factor.

BGE is awesome. No need for a gas grill if you have a BGE.

No, it's a Strickland Propane advertising slogan coined by Hank Hill.

FWIW, at my old house I had the BGE and a Weber Genesis. I rarely used the Weber because I didn't want to bother with the cover or propane and ended up giving it to my in-laws. My new outdoor kitchen has built in propane and the grill sits under a covered porch so my current utilization is closer to 50/50

I have a BGE, a gas grill, an offset smoker, and a pellet grill. The gas grill has not been used in probably a year. It is going to go away as soon as I can figure out some corner of hell to send it to. I use the pellet grill for weeknight cooking of things like chicken, pork, etc. The BGE is by far the best grill I own, but the pellet grill is more convenient and the wife can use it. My suggestion would be a BGE and a good (not Traeger) pellet grill.

Charbroil gas/propane grill with tru-infrared cooking surface FTW

Focused on developing innovative products at an affordable price for more than 65 years, Char-Broil has been a pioneer in outdoor cooking. 2012 marks the beginning of the next generation of grills and outdoor cookers with the launch of a new TRU-Infrared performance standard that delivers on average 30-50% juicier results than traditional gas grills. All Char-Broil TRU-Infrared grills generate a minimum of 65% infrared heat (some as high as 75%), which is evenly spread across the entire cooking surface to cook food - without drying - at temperatures that range from simmer to sear. The patented emitter and burner plate design on the grills limits the amount of hot air that comes in contact with the food, virtually eliminating flare-ups, producing very even heat (no hot or cold spots), while using less fuel than traditional gas grills.

I have an egg and a Weber Summit built in propane grill. I use the egg, mostly for smoking, and the wife uses the gas grill. She does most of the cooking and is not willing to mess around with starting the coals. I tried to talk her out of getting the gas grill when we were building our outdoor kitchen by telling her that texags said we would never use the gas grill if we had an egg. In this case texags was wrong.

I'm about 85% sure that gas grills cook with fire.

I'm don't so much feel shame for myself as I feel embarrasment for my kids to be stuck with such a failure. Even worst, it took me an hour to unpack the box and put together the effing stand/nest last night. Working on getting it finished up this evening.

Fido - this is about the setup we're looking to do. So is speed the main reason you use your Weber? The other argument I've heard is cooking/grill space, but it would seem you could just get another egg ands solve that problem.

You do not need a gas grill, ever.

You're really in such a hurry you can't wait the fifteen minutes it takes to use charcoal?

Kamado + infinity. Try making pulled pork on a gas grill. Try making pizza on a gas grill. Try making a steak seared at 700F for 1.5min a side then letting it rest for 10 mins and throwing back on around 400F for another 2 mins per side.

Now try all that on a kamado and get back to me.

I'll be the voice of dissent...if you're spending 10k plus on an outdoor kitchen out in a gas grill. Future buyers will expect one.

I've got a Kamado
A DCS gas grill that has a seer(700 F)
And an old school New Braunfels smoker

Use all 3 depends on the occasion, prep time and whatnot suchas moreover...

Just don't start acting like you are a BBQ champ because you cook on the Big Green Crock Pot. I hate talking to guys who think they know the art of smoking and come to find out they use a crock pot called BGE.

I love results with a BGE, I really do, but you said what I was thinking on this one. Here in Atlanta, every suburban dude I know that buys a BGE automatically thinks he's Steven Raichlen. I also see this "expert-itise" when they walk out of the Orvis store with fly fishing equipment.

Again, not disparaging the kamados; I have the time for brisket on Saturdays, but not always burgers on Tuesdays after work.
