Is Roku still the recommended box for streaming TV and apps?

Any others I should consider?

Sub-question: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus, or all of them?

Apple TV if you're in that ecosystem already. I'm not, and as a cable cutter, I love my Roku.

Ah, forgot about Chromecast. I'll definitely check it out.

And yeah, not really into Apple in general, so no AppleTV.

We have a Roku and Chromcast and no cable. Haven't missed it.

My only hesitation if for live sports. I'm not sure I can cut the cable during football season. How do you guys do it?

How do you watch cable channels with that setup?

Ah. So the money savings tradeoff is not being able to view cable channels. Guess I need to see if that is worth $60-80 a month.

I prefer watching football with other fans, so going to a bar or something to watch it works for me.

Interesting, MKF. I too plan on cancelling U-Verse TV, but plan on keeping my internet service. So you're saying I should still be able to access and use WatchESPN? Because that would be great...

Also, do any of these services offer Disney Jr? I may get murdered by a miniature female if not...

Roku now has the WatchESPN app. It works great assuming you have access through your internet provider or know some one who does and will share their log in.

Chromecast just added HBO Go today. It is limited with it's native apps (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go) but you can stream just about any thing, including local media, from a Chrome browser on your PC.

I have a Roku and Chromecast. Roku is the work horse. Chromecast is a neat little device that cost me about $11 after 3 free months of Netflix. It may over time become as useful as my Roku but it's not quite there yet.

Thanks guys. Are the extra features on the Roku 2 and 3 worth the price difference? (especially since I would be getting 2 of them)

The do you all use a HD antenna to get your local channels?

Also, can someone help me understand why it's a selling point to have HBO GO on these boxes? Can't you only access HBO GO if you already have an HBO subscription on your TV? If you have HBO on your TV, why the hell do you need to stream it from a box to your TV?

It's possible but not easy. Simplest way is to bum off a friend.

Interesting. I understand bumming it off of someone.

But in the grand (legal) scheme of TV, what is the point? You buy this device and it allows you to stream HBO to your TV that already has HBO. Brilliant!

On demand and HBO on a TV in your house that doesn't have a cable/sat box

Ah, thank you. I hadn't thought of a TV without a set-top box...

I got the Roku 3 mainly so I could hard wire instead of doing wireless internet.

Thanks for the help! I think I'll go ahead and order the Roku and give it a shot.
