What a pain in the ass it is to wait in line, unload all my sh*t, scan every single item, put it in sacks, then put it back in the basket.

Sometimes, you have to do things. And those things take time. And that's okay.

Self checkouts are a step in the right direction. RFID chipping would be too expensive, but I could envision a smart-cart/scanner solution that might work. Fraud becomes an issue when you have people doing everything through the phone.

RFID should speed things along.

Would the RFID's be disabled once you left the store?

I wouldn't want a bunch of corporations tracking down where I live.

The HEB in Temple just did away with all their self checkout lines. Too much theft.

RFID does seem cool, though.

I would pay an assortment of American dollars and Mexican pesos to see Gyrene and finc duke it out.

RFID tags, particularly the passive ones that would be used in this kind of application, are short range. Plus they probably wouldn't track a particular package, just a SKU.

I kind of wonder just how cheap RFID could go. Right now it's too expensive, but if someone like Walmart were to start chipping everything (not just pallets like they do now), the economics would improve drastically.

In any case, if you want to know the future of this kind of thing, just keep an eye on Walmart. That's generally where the innovations happen.

My vision of ideal grocery shopping is a cart with a bar code scanner and plastic bag dispenser built in. I tell it who I am (it already knows my account info because I've shopped there before) and I take items off the shelf, scan the bar code, and bag it up. When I'm done, I hit the pay now button, and take my crap to the car. Done and Mf'ing done.

But yeah, theft is gonna be a bit of a hurdle with that model. We'll see...

RFID is the way to go, basically you would run your cart through a scanner, like toll roads, and it'll spit out your bill. Problem is the chips for RFID are too expensive for every single manufacturer to put one on every single product they make. Think bar codes.

Give it a few years and you can even get a robot to wipe yo' lazy azz. I mean, RFID will be cheap enough to obey your every wish.

I would have thought RFID would be cheap enough to deploy and what is holding it back would be just logistics issues and sorting out workflows.

Not quite the same thing, but NFC tags (a form of rfid) are still pretty pricey but I figure that is just because its a spec that hasn't really seen a lot of consumer adoption, and therefore economies of scale haven't been developed to exploit.

Passive RFID is the most exceptable at the moment, but it is by no means perfect. Ideally you could put all items with passive RFID tags on them in your cart and run said cart through a checkout station which would read all the chips, you pay and it out the door in no time. The problem with this is the effectiveness of the RFID chips and their ability to be block, particularly by metals and liquids. This opens up the opportunity for theft much more than it is right now.
