Visiting Baby Question?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Couple has a nine week old baby and we went over yesterday around lunch time to visit them and meet the new baby (and brought lunch of course).

When we were sitting down for lunch, I asked her if she’d like me to hold the baby so she could eat, and she just said, oh thats ok, only to hand the baby off to her husband a few minutes later so she could eat. She never offered for either of us to hold the baby while we were over.

Question….is it weird for a new mom not to let/offer for people to hold their baby, when they are coming over for the specific purpose of visiting them?

If it was anyone other than you asking, then yes, it would be weird.

i'm assuming they wanted you over to show off their spawn. not to let everyone who felt like touching their newborn to get their germs all over him.

Just curious. I know you people wouldn't believe it, but I've baby sat and been around infants my whole life. I'm actually really good with babies, but I'm sure none of yall will take that at my word

Real answer, yeah, some moms are paranoid of their kids getting sick.

Texags answer - I know you don't wash your hands when you go pee, so I'm certainly not going to let you touch my baby or shake my hand for that matter

it's not about whether you're good with babies or not. you still carry germs that he/she hasn't been around, and i'm sure the parents are still worried about having them out too much.

it would be much weirder if they came to YOUR house and then didn't let you hold the baby.

well of course I washed my hands before being around a baby.

Then why have people over at all?

I think that's really weird. It's like inviting friends over to see your new car without letting them drive it around the block.

OP, aren't you the one who had violent diarrhea for a week? I wouldn't even let you in my house, let alone hold a newborn. If you want to hold a baby, trick some dude into knocking you up.

Yeah she probably just didn't want her kid to get your Italian Sheeting Sickness.

If they're first-time parents I think it's understandable. New parents can be really paranoid. Most of my friends already have a kid or two, so they're much more laid-back about that kind of thing. Lately, everytime I visit a new baby, my friends are dying for someone else to take over for a little while.

I never had diarrhea. I had a stomach virus italy and was violently throwing up

Some people are just nuerotic over-protective with their newborns. Especially if it's their first. I wouldn't take it personally.

In that case, can you come baby-sit this weekend?

The BSC in some new moms can increase 10 fold after squeezing out a new puppy. Hormones and ****.

In all seriousness, I didn't want anyone touching our kids when they were born. 9 weeks is a little extreme, but you can't take it personally.

uni,

I let one of my best friends drive it around the block. Certainly wasn't a party of 5 different people driving it.

If it was their first child, then not surprising. All the new mommy stuff these days says don't let strangers near your baby until they've started immunizations.

I think that parents of newborns can do whatever they feel is necessary when it comes to their kid, and people without kids can kiss their asses if they don't like it.

That being said, I'm also a believer that keeping your kids completely sheltered from other people and over sanitizing will cause your baby to be sicker in the long run. Let that immune system do its job.

So if people are truly supposed to follow this, are parents with other children supposed to keep the infant in a bubble? I'm pretty sure kids in daycare or in school are gonig to bring in a lot more germs than two adults

I've never met you IRL, but I probably wouldn't let you hold a newborn either based solely on your posting on this website.

I made a cake and did take out from California Pizza Kitchen (pizzas and salads).

They said that was one of their favorite take out places and near our house. Judge away

This. The more you don't like children the more people insist that you hold them for some reason, as if their baby is the one that's going to awaken parental instincts within you. I generally just lick the baby's face when this happens to discourage future such episodes.

I love holding and taking care of babies, always have. I just like giving them back eventually.

Some brand new parents can be a bit over protective. That being said, I don't consider a 9 week old to be a new born anymore; that's just over 2 months. To me a new born is less than 6 weeks old. Kids do have to be exposed to some germs to get their immune system working properly. My third child didn't even go home first when he left the hospital. His oldest brother was in Taekwondo, so we took the baby there for his brother's class before going home. Guess what? He's still alive and he's 4 years old now!

Maybe she just didn't want you to have to hold the child instead of eating. Some people are just considerate.

Same people who will be complaining about how often their child gets sick at school or daycare, while all the while, they've been undermining their kiddo's immune system.

So should I have asked again after eating? I already hinted once I wanted to hold the baby, thought that would be rude
