One of the girls in my A&P class is flying to India the day after our final to A. get engaged then 2. Get married 4 days later. She has not met this man. Her family is spending all of their savings to go there and for this marriage to take place. Apparently he is in school so she won't actually "live" with him for about a year but she will be on a honeymoon with him for 2 weeks before coming back to the US.

I was shocked when she told me. I asked her if she was excited and she said she was but she is more excited that she'll have time to get to know him before she actually has to live with him. I know this is normal for some cultures but it seems so foreign to me.

It seems foreign to you? Maybe b/c it is foreign.

They're Indian, so the likelihood that they're attractive is about 1%. So nothing of value is lost.

Arranged marriages where the couple has no say in the matter is pretty rare, I think. There are merits to this arrangement, imo, most notably that both enter the marriage with perhaps more realistic expectations than your average westerner.

It's a totally different institution, though. Hard to really compare.

I've actually known more Indians to have arranged marriages than Saudis. Most of the Saudi guys I know picked their brides. Granted, it's always a first cousin, but still.

she isn't what I would call "pretty" - she is super nice though. They are finalizing things as soon as they get there. I'm not sure even her father has met the guy she's supposed to marry. I didn't want to ask many questions because I really didn't know what to ask.

You should ask questions, even if they seem stupid. Most people are very happy to talk about their culture.

I did ask her why she couldn't "get to know him" now over the next 2 weeks before she goes and she said she might get to talk to him after things are for sure "finalized". She said something about moving money to an account in India and having to actually buy their plane tickets first.

Most of the known world participated in arranged marriages for thousands of years. It probably was that way for so long because it worked.

it worked because people respected the idea. hardly anyone respects marriage anymore, and fewer still the prospect of sight unseen arranged marriage (not that I'm a proponent of it). plus in olden days it was a good way to expand family wealth and such.

bmc, I think it was more than that

a) elders had more respect, kids actual listened

b) old people had more life experience

I would definitely be okay with an arranged marriage, if my parents agreed on someone, because of the following reasons:

1. My mom would pick an intelligent and genuine Catholic girl. And she has a BSC radar that is 100% accurate.

2. My dad would make sure I married a stone cold fox.

My step-daughter has a friend that is 28 or 29 that does not date. I have known her and her sister since they were in high school. The yoinger sister dates, but the older one has said she would almost just rather have her parents pick somebody for her. She is really not interested in dating and has maybe gone on five dates in her life.

It boggles the mind. She is gorgeous and is truly one of the nicest people you could ever meet and is very smart as well.

It's like having a Ferrari and never taking it out of the garage.

But that 1% is ridiculously hot. I have a friend who had an arranged marriage, and she is pretty hot for an Indian. I forget what family he was from, but she is a Mittal. The marriage was arranged to maintain the class standing of both families.

Two of my best friends are brownies and one of them has a brother that basically had an arranged marriage but seems to be working out for them.

The man was born and raised in America while the other is straight from India and has assimilated pretty well. She can speak really english really well and works at a bank.

I think it goes to show that parents kind of know what's best (most of the time). I wouldn't pick a dog for my boys but as a kid I wouldn't have let someone pick someone for me either so I understand the reluctance.

Dot hotness - it's kind of like redheads.....there's very few in between those that are hot and those thay aren't. There are indeed those that are hot though. The girl from The Big Bang and the one above for a couple of examples.
