First Job: How long before first decent raise/promotion?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I ask because my youngest brother is graduating soon and a good friend of his from high school has been all over facebook complaining about his job. He has been there about 10mo and apparently hasn't gotten a raise/bonus and feels it should have happened already.

Now, I know the word "millenial" immediately comes to mind. But I have actually met this person and hes a solid kid, came from a good middle class family, worked during high school and college, etc. Are recruiters/interviewers promising riches and grandeur to young-ins now a days? For me, it was about a year and a half before I was even eligible for a decent raise/promotion.

Any insight?

He hasn't even been there a year yet. Depending on how often they do evaluations of course, but that's pretty early to be expecting much of anything.

Just depends on the company and the line of work. If someone leaves a job interview without knowing the answer as to how that process would work and the usual timing, then they may not have to worry about getting promotions anyway. Generally at a company that hires strong, competent people and a role thats involves actual professional skill, its probably annual on the raise and 1-2 years on promotions (promotions that aren't just same job, new title).

My only thought was that maybe the competition for entry pay level talent is high enough companies have been forced to up the incentives. Still, 10mo seems awfully soon.

Work as hard as you can.
Then, work a little harder than that.
Keep a better attitude than anyone in the office.

Everything else will take care of itself.

A role where they are giving raises a few months into the job tells me someone is in a line of work dominated by mouthbreathers, and they're just relieved you turned out to be a notch above the usual mouthbreather.

In my recruitment/interviews out of college, raises/bonuses/salaries were never discussed or mentioned until my offer letter. All of my questions revolved around responsibility of an entry level position, structure of the company, and benefits.

I chose the company I am with not because of my salary or frequency of pay increases, but because I thought they were the strongest company to work for out of my options. With that being said, the pay is great and we have yearly reviews which come with a likely pay and level increase.

If you're an all-star at your position, you'll get paid like one. If you feel entitled enough to b*tch about it in public on facebook, you're probably not the ace you think you are.

Those of you with raises within 6mo. What do you do? Where did you start?

Reviews are typically done at the one year mark. Unless he's just blown them away or it's stated in an offer letter (like an introductory period), a 6 month review is rare. But they do happen on occasion. The yearly review is much more common.

If I were him:
1) I would stop complaining about it on FB. He may have coworkers on there.
2) I would get out my employee handbook. It's usually covered in there
3) If it's not in there, contact HR and ask what the yearly review process is like since he would be hitting his year anniversary in the coming months. Politely let them know he would like to be prepared with his goals, accomplishments, etc listed out on their form and would appreciate a timeline so he can start working on it in advance. They will probably be more than happy to send him the form and let him know when he's up for his review.

But he needs to be prepared to not get an automatic raise or bonus. You don't just get a raise because you've passed a magic year marker. You have to earn it. And the economy isn't great and with the election right around the corner, many companies are taking the wait and see stance. They are wanting to hold onto the cash they have in case of another downturn, if they have any cash to hold on to. He also needs to remember that while his boss may want to give him a huge raise, they don't always have the final say. Main budgets have the final say.

He needs to remain patient and be happy he has a job. I can guarantee his attitude with not getting a raise has probably overstepped into work already. If it hasn't, it will if he doesn't watch it.

Some places have arrangements where new employees are on short term contracts, hired provisionally, or put in a training/entry role for the first few months with the understanding that if the employee is retained past the end of that period they will be hired permanently or promoted. Companies sometimes abuse those arrangements. That may be what happened here.

Then again, I've also seen people who just felt that they should get promotions/salary increases very fast. Different employers have different policies; some promote at need, some use a pure meritocracy, and others only consider employees for promotion at milestones in tenure (such as every 6 months or 1 year).

Depends on the job. The economy has slowed a lot of raises though.

I'm making abut 17% more than when I started about 3 years ago. Got a 10% raise about 3 months in. Got a promotion and 2.5% raise in January. 1-2% adjustments each year.

Can also depend on performance and responsibility load. A buddy of mine started entry level in late March and was promoted to managing a team of 12 within an investment firm. He showed initiative and asked to take on more projects outside his job though. It's all about impressions and attitude, in my opinion.

There is no doubt that his manager/boss/guy trying to undercut him in the office is fully aware of these rants.

Tell him to get that ch/t off fb. Word will get back if hasn't already. He'll be headed toward unemployed instead of promoted if he keeps it up.

Better yet, tell him to tag his boss so his boss is aware of his dissatisfaction. How else would the boss know to give him a raise?

Since starting 3 years ago at my company, I'm up significantly from where I started. Starting my 3rd position with the company now and had the option of 3 positions when I got this one.

Basically like others have said:

1) Work hard and then keep working hard, resting on your laurels won't get you anywhere
2) Be humble when praise comes your way. It's ok to be proud of your accomplishments and even highlight them to the right people at times, but don't go overboard.
3) Keep a good attitude. Everyone has bad days, but that's ok if they're rare. You want people to have memories of good interactions with you.
4) Keep networking...when new positions open up, you'll be thought of if you've been doing all of the above.

Most of all...take care of yourself and family. You are the only person looking after your best interest. Many people may help along the way and certainly help others, but take care of number one.
