Really? Why? You have to wonder what those discussions are about.

They hang out, eat pizza, go to northgate, etc. Just like any other student group on campus, except for the GLBT guys who tend to spend most of their time having sex with each other.

there are about a billion christian groups on campus. but one group for people who are agnostic and or atheist gets you in a tizzy? and why would they necessarily have to talk about anything? what's wrong with simply fellowshipping with like minded people?

It's so they can be freaking annoying.

I guess they figure people love the bible-thumpers telling everyone to repent so having a pastafarian counter-demonstration to be act like dicks would make people even happier on their walk to class or work.

I just don't see the point. At least christians can discuss the bible, their faith, etc.

They discuss those same things, just how much they hate them and think they are stupid and evil.

Wait? Shouldn't these guys be in as much disagreement with each other as they are with people of faith?

Militant atheists/agnostics who join these groups tend to have grown up in fundamentalist households or communities. Probably baptist parents, since we are in Texas. Since baptists are *******s, they now hate all religion and are wary of religious people. Thus, they find themselves more at-ease around people who aren't religious.

Deal with it. They can do what they want.

Sorry CDUB, most atheists have no hate for religion, they don't agree, they may think it's a waste of time to them personally, but most do not hate religion.

Hating religion is something that most theists do. Hating religion is something most christians do, most muslims do.

well shark, i don't see the point in groups of people sitting around discussing fairy tales, so i guess we're even.

some kid tried to hand me a pamphlet the other day on campus to attend some christian function or other. i politely said, "no thank you i'm not a christian." he looked at me as if i had the plague.

point is, i'd rather not solicit me to come to their christian conferences, but it's a free country, and it doesn't bother me, so why should i care what they do/don't do?

They probably talk about science, facts, evolution, fossils proving the earth is billions of years old, and the evils of child molestation by priests.

Just a guess. I've never gone to the meetings. The GLBTA meeting was on the same night and they had free pizza.

My doubts and philosophical thoughts as an Atheist are shockingly similar to the thoughts I had as a devout Christian.

What if I'm wrong?
What's the best way to discuss my religious beliefs with people who view things differently?
How can I cope with this difficult situation I'm dealing with?

It would have been nice in college to get the perspective of people who were going through the same thing. Even now, I can't go to some friends for advice because I know their answer will be faith-based.

For the record I don't enjoy being harassed by christians or mormons either. And I'm catholic.

I think the issue is that atheists and agnostics have opposing belief systems. Agnostics believe that you CANNOT know for sure whether there is a God or not. Atheists, on the other hand, know FOR SURE that there is no God. Their like-minded fellowship, therefore, is untenable.

If any atheist says he knows FOR SURE there is no god, then that atheist hasn't actually thought it out.

I'm an atheist, I don't know FOR SURE(as in, I can't prove) that god does not exist, it's just the likelihood is so remote that to entertain the possibility is futile. You do this too, you don't believe allah exists, that Vishnu exists, or any diety in every other religion exists.

i think the point of the OP is it seems odd to organize a group to discuss nothing and their belief in it, or lack thereof. As in, why not have a group to discuss lack of belief in the tooth fairy? that aliens don't exist?

I don't think it's that they should not be allowed to organize...but more what's the point?

Honest answer - you don't have hundreds of other student groups devoted to spreading the good news about the tooth fairy or aliens. You don't have politicians professing their faith in tooth fairies and aliens to try to get elected, or trying to include lessons about those things in school classrooms. You don't have large, well-funded groups advocating certain laws based on their beliefs in the tooth fairy or aliens, either. You also don't see terrorists blowing sheet up in the name of aliens or the tooth fairy.

Religion plays a pretty major role in politics and current events. I don't know why it's so hard to understand that people who don't follow any religion would want to discuss those things from a non-religious perspective with other non-religious minded people.

I'm starting the B/CS "I hate the tooth fairy" club

We will meet at the park and discuss British comedies so we can make fun of their teeth.
