Is there a difference in quality or taste? I can't tell at all. I usually just buy the cheapest.

i dated a guy once who wouldn't buy milk unless it actually had a picture of a cow on the carton or jug. he felt that hey-- it's all about the cows, so we should have at least a picture of one on the label.

luckily HEB has a cow on theirs.

Once you drink Horizon organic milk, you'll never go back.

As for the regular plastic jug stuff, no there is not a difference. It's made in the same plants, just labeled differently.

Cheap milk almost never stays good past the Exp Date. Expensive milk will last 3 or 4 days past the Exp Date.

Whole milk for me. I just can't stick with the other stuff long enough to get used to it.

We buy our milk at Braums. Around $2.50/gallon, and tastes better (in the family's opinion) than other stores.

BTW - We go through a gallon a day at our house, so we know our milk...

The difference is in the transportation from the dairy to packaging plants.

Tanker trucks carry it. They might carry a load of Benzene, Gasoline, or whatever, then on the back-haul pick up a load of milk.

It costs them less to transport it if they don't wash out the tank between loads. Therefore, the cheap milk comes from tankers that don't get cleaned out, the expensive milk comes from tankers that are cleaned & sanitized between loads.

Just kidding.

what Cub said is right.

I've been at the dairies when they switched from generic to select brands (i.e Borden)...it was the same milk, same expiration, same jugs, just different labels.

The exception is premium brands like Promise Land...now that's good stuff.

Blauser: either you know not of what you speak, or are trying to pull the non-knowledgable's collective leg. Milk is transported in special trucks, and cannot be transported in what's called non-sanitary trucks. Different fittings, different temperature coils, different most everything.

CRAP! just now saw your disclaimer! One of these days I'll learn to read ALL your posts before reacting!

In general, it doesn't really matter; I buy 2%. However, Promised Land milk is yummy; Doug usually gets some of their chocolate milk when we go to the store.

I've tried the Promised Land and the Horizen and it tastes the same to me as anything else in a jug. I do think Braum's is the best I've had and has a noticably different taste.

I heard that you should buy milk that's in a paper carton, rather than in a plastic jug.

Anyone know why?

promised land is the one that comes in the glass bottle, yes? i don't like that one because it dowsn't pour well. it drips all down the bottle when you stop pouring.

I seem to recall that the whole plastic carton v. paper carton thing has to do with light/sunlight breaking down vitamin D in the milk - therefore, it is better to get it in the paper cartons.

This is what I seem to remember off of the top of my head - if there is a food science type person that is more in the know then I apologize for sharing my first thoughts.

Most milk, Ie Borden, Heb other reg. priced stuff just comes from random dairies that they purchase from. The expensive stuff like promised land comes from one particular diary with only jersey cows. The organic milk is a sham and I will get into that if anybody doesnt believe me. Buy the cheapest stuff, unless you can get it in a cardboard container, because light damages milk and gives it a funny taste. The whole thing about the expiration is not the brand name, but how cold is is kept and if you expose it to bacteria(drinking out of carton). If anybody wants to know more just ask. I do this type of education for my internship with Barn Tours www.barntours.com

Why would you want to buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?

Okay, I'll bite. Tell me how organic milk is a sham. Please specifically discuss how it is a sham despite the new federal labeling standards that have been put in place.

Of course, I'll still drink it b/c I think it tastes better. But, I would like to know more about it.

Thanks

the Promised Land dairy is in Floresville..southeast of San Antonio. Pretty neat place, if you're into dairies. My father used to do some business with them.
