The biggest problem the EDMS XM has is it's weight. You are easily over 25 lbs. If you are conducting long range reconnaissance or sniper missions then the weight will prove to be a real detriment. While the range (~1900 meters if I am not mistaken) is impressive, it's practical use comes into question for ranges beyond the capabilities of the 30-06. At 1900 meters, environmental effects on the round would be astonishing. Most snipers would tell you that taking a shot that long is not a scenario that they would want to find themselves in. The concept of sniping is a combination of superior tactical movement and outstanding marksmanship. I would however like to have the .408 if I were sniping from a fixed position (a deliberate defensive position or the like). Even then I would rather have the use of mortars to defend against advancing enemy troops. Given that all snipers are experts at calling fire missions, they would almost all opt for calling indirect fire in lieu of taking a one in a million 1900 meter shot. Now, I am well aware that ego can play into a scenario. Heck, who wouldn't want to be able to say they sniped some dude at nearly 2,000 meters?

In conclusion:
1. I would opt for the 30-06 for practicality as a sniper rifle.
2. I am not a sniper, so you can take all of this with a grain of salt.
3. If you would like a real answer I can consult a couple of my sniper friends and get their opinions on the matter.
