My daughter is a freshman at GA Tech. We live in SA, but have family (grandmother in College Station). She is thinking about taking a course or two at either A&M or Blinn this summer. The courses that she can take at A&M that will transfer are Chem 111, Math 152 and Physices 218. The classes at Blinn that will transfer are Math 2414 (calc II) and physics 2425 (intro to physics). Any comments regarding taking any of these courses at A&M vs Blinn would be appreciated (cost, teachers, etc.)

Blinn = waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper (about 1/3 the cost of A&M b/c you don't have all the silly fees on there (ie transportation fee, rec center fee, computing fee, random fee fee, etc)). PLUS if you get good teachers (Twilia Miller for Cal II, NOT Honan for Physics 218) it will be an overall GOOD experience.

Thanks for the reply. Do A&M teachers also teach at Blinn or are they completely different teachers? Is it any easier at Blinn than A&M?

Some profs are at both (those not tenured).

I had Honan years ago for physics and it wasn't that bad. Don't expect physics and cal to be cakewalks because they are at Blinn. They will be as tough as taking them in the summer at TAMU.

Pro Ag,
Thanks for the info. I felt that the courses at Blinn would be just as tough, since they are accepted at A&M (and GT). If my daughter goes there this summer, I don't want her to go in thinking its going to be easy.

Can anyone recommend any other profs at Blinn or at A&M that they would recommend for these courses?

I took some math at Blinn a couple of years ago. I had Buxkemper and she was horrible. She basically expected you to know most of what she was teaching and it was just a bad experience all around. Here are some profs that I'd recommend, don't know if they teach your daughters math or not, but they are Amy Main and Mr. England. Other than that not to sure. Hope that helps.

Amy Main must have gotten a HELL of alot better b/c I had her for MATH 150 at A&M in fall of '96...it was her first semester to teach at A&M and she was probably the worst teacher/professor I've had since being in college. No one knew what the hell was going on...she even cried in class one day b/c she couldn't figure out why no one could understand what she was teaching. She obviously didn't last long at A&M.

I spent my Frosh year at Blinn. Took Cal I,II,III and also Phys I, II for Engr.

for Cal II Miller is a good one, I heard she only teaches morning classes now... take it!

took Cal I w/ Stoley. She's OK, demand a lot from us and gives tons of HW

took Phys I w/ Kingcade. He's baddd . Never did anything in class except listening to his stories. Everybody got 40 at best on exams.

took Phys II w/Honan. He's OK. He sort of knows his stuff

That's funny. I took cal and Math 308 at Blinn and I understood it better than those I know that took it at TAMU.

It's more about the student than the teacher in some most basic classes.

All of those A&M classes are 10 week summer classes. They may be at Blinn as well, but there is no way the course load for those is as bad as it is at A&M. From someone who took one of the 10 week courses, definately take them at Blinn, especially if she is going to take more than 1. Those classes are 10 weeks of pure hell in the summer. 2 labs a week!!! BARF!!!! If you take two of those at A&M that is 4 lab reports a week for 10 weeks. This is bringing back painfull memories...

One summer I took Engrineering Cal II (152) here from Amy Austin. She was teaching the same class at Blinn that summer, but she only taught the first half of our summer. I should have taken her at Blinn. She was awesome, the second half of the summer was a nightmare because the second prof was suck.
