how the eff do they make their own generic brand of everything in the entire store? I've never understood this.

I'm guessing they buy out other companies to make it for them, but how do they manage this for practically everything but produce and beer (at least not yet)???

The stores contract with the name brands to produce their store brands. The name brands are willing to do this, because it can help to guarantee prime shelf space for their product.

The name brands will not produce their exact recipe for the store brand, but it is similar. Those chips were likely made by Frito-Lay.

sure, you boys remember that tainted dog food a few years back? all brands from very high priced "special" to cheapy generic was made by the same plant! I know bread is the same way just a different sleeve covers it.

I can tell you for sure HCF chicken is Sanderson Farms and Tyson. The plants produce it to the HEB qc specs and package it too.

Well if you think about it, the majority of all grocery stores have their own brand of things--and the quality isn't that bad. SO much cheaper than buying the real stuff. I always buy store branded things when I can.

My only complaint about HEB. They put so much of their own brand stuff on the shelves that a lot of the time you can't find the name brand you are looking for.

HEB stuff > HCF stuff >>> Krogers stuff

I can see some of the HEB stuff being contracted out. It is usually a competitor in quality and price to name brand stuff. Most of the HCF stuff is just cheap to be cheap, who knows where most of that comes from. I prefer either of them to the Krogers stuff though.

Yeah, I prefer HEB brands to Hill Country Fare over many name brands. 99 times out of 100 I get HEB over name brands. Exceptions: Kraft Mac and Cheese, Hellmanns mayo. I honestly prefer Creamy Creations Ice Cream over the brand names including BB. Some BB specialties are better, but overall I prefer CC, especially the mint chocolate chip.

And I like a lot of the Central Market Organics stuff if I am looking for an organic option. It is awesome that there are so many organic options made so affordable my the CMO brand. I buy lots of the frozen veggies and pastas and am really happy being able to buy them and not spend a pantload.

The more HEB own brand products y'all buy the bigger my quarterly bonus is.

And just so y'all know HEB is run by Aggies.

Not entirely.

he company operates several manufacturing facilities in Texas, including one of the largest milk and bread processing plants in the Southwest. H-E-B produces many of their own-brand products, including milk, ice cream, bread, snacks, and ready-cooked meats and meals. These and other private-label products are sold under various brands, including "Central Market Naturals", "Central Market Organics","H-E-B", "H-E-Buddy", "Hill Country Fare", "H-E-B Creamy Creations" ice cream, "H-E-B Mootopia" milk, and "H-E-B Fully Cooked."

Unlike Trader Joes (which does get many of its products from name brand labels, HEB actually owns research and manufacturing facilities for some of the products they sell. It's one of the reasons I really love (and miss) HEB.

I remember way back when, seeing the old school generic HEB brand. Gray packaging, black letters. BEER. POTATO CHIPS. Those were awesome!

Store brands and off brands are made to different specifications than name brand. These products may be produced by national companies or others. Its all about the specifications.

I remember the white package with black lettering generic brands at HEB back in the late 80's/early 90's.

Usually HCF is > HEB, IMO. They're both HEB brands... but HCF is generally better.

I think my dad still has a couple of those cans on his desk. He bought a case of generic HEB beer back in the 80's on a lark, and one of the cans was actually EMPTY. Another (possibly a different case) was 1/4 full. So he saved them for decoration.
