That article on professionalism and appearance got me thinking about facial hair. The article touched on it briefly. Is facial hair bad for professionalism? Does it depend on the person? Is it more of a dated concept that facial hair is bad?

I have facial hair and I'm badass at my job.
Well maintained facial hair is good in my book. Its kind of like this...Girl A and girl B can have the same interesting haircut but if girl A fixes her hair daily and girl B goes to the office with wet hair, girl A looks professional and girl B looks like a lazy chick who takes no pride in herself.

PSA to the wimmenz: Bleaching your pron stache is not an acceptable way of dealing with it. Guys don't like girls with a blonde stache anymore than they like girls with a black stache.
Well groomed beards are a weakness of mine
beards on a women are especially non professional
depends on the person. My dad has always had the "professor mustache" and he wears it well.

What about the 5 oclock shadow look... if its maintained can it be pulled off in a professional atmosphere, or does it just look lazy?
I usually do this but im an engineer so I never see anyone except people who think khaki cargos and a hawaiian polo passes for "business casual."

well i must say my generation gets credit for 2 things in the workplace: we killed the tie and we made long hair on guys acceptable.

Men should be clean-shaven for an interview. There are exceptions (retired NCO with a mustache is perfectly acceptable), but for the most part facial hair is a no go on men. On women, if you have facial hair you might as well be fat.

I've been rocking stubble for about four years now. Haven't shaved clean since 2007.
My policy has always been to just look better than the worst-dressed/worst-groomed employee at the office. And as long as one of my co-workers continues to purchase all her clothes from the Salvation Army, I can keep it pretty casual.

Why have beards become so trendy with guys? They are friggin' disgusting and make you look like a degenerate that went into the wild and lived on a bus. It's one thing to have a goatee or mustache, but beards to me are just a face full of pubes.

It depends on your profession. I work in telecommunicaitons and none of the men on our executive team have facial hair. About 75% of our mid-level managers have facial hair.

Art, you have seen my facial hair. I tend to think I can pull it off as does my wife. I always keep it trimmed and neat. What do you think?

Beards have become trendy? I haven't noticed that. I used to have a goatee. Then it seemed that every dewsher had one, so I grew mine out until it was several inches long (fify protected). Then it seemed like many dewshers started doing that, so I trimmed it and grew a full beard. If the dewshers are now growing beards I don't know what to do next.
Mr. Cub, I would recommend a fu man chu grown to the point where it can be braided

But, I have a biased opinion because I tend to like facial hair. I would be interested to see a study of upper management/executive level men and presence/absence of facial hair.

lazy in my book. how does someone know you keep it 'maintained' that way when it just looks like you forgot to shave? ... or that you slept too late and didn't have time.
I changed jobs last year and had to lose my beard. People generally estimate my age to be about ten years lower now. That doesn't really help my authority.
tramp stamp is ok with staches and goats but not beards? That's awesome. I just learned all I need to know
