One of the most awesome moments of my life was watching hundreds of other Aggies pay tribute to a close friend of mine who had died in a car crash. I can't begin to describe how that felt.

If you have to ask "how long" then you probably dont need to go.....

Speaking of cynical. I'm really getting sick of rude or ignorant people on texags. We're all Aggies and we're all family. How dare any of you accuse me of having the wrong attitude about Silver Taps simply because I ask how long it is. Shameful.

Because I'm an Aggie - just like you. I thought that the few posts I've seen or had directed towards me have been from a few inconsiderate members. I thought I'd leave it to them to be rude and assume everyone else had a spec of decency. But we all know what to assume means. Hate to say I'm sad that I'm wrong.

If Texas A&M could only keep 1 tradition, I would want it to be Silver Taps.

I don't know if any other University has a similar tribute to deceased students, but Silver Taps is a wonderful tradition. Every student needs to attend at least once.

So because I haven't been to Silver Taps I'm not an Aggie and therefore you can disrespect me and judge me?
I allowed my education to get in the way of having fun in college. I took too many hours Freshman year (18 and 20) and I didn't have enough fun or get connected enough. Now I'm trying to make the most of my Sophomore year.

btw, Dona's Mom is easy, have you meat her?

Ok. I understand I was just hoping for a pleasant response. I'm not a fifth generation Ag, I didn't even hear about A&M until about 2 years before I got here, and I came here because of the Family and sense of Tradition. I love the latter, and want to feel more connected to the former. And that's why I've promised myself to go to every Silver Taps this semester.

And no, I missed that memo, Human

1. Try to make it by the MSC, northside, commons, or Academica building today. There will be pens and cards for you to write letters to the families of those being honored. PLEASE DO THIS! It means a lot to those families. Before Silver Taps, Traditions Council will host them at a building on campus, explain what to expect, and escort them to Silver Taps. They also give them the letters. Its an amazing thing to hand each one of the families a huge stack of letters from the Aggie Family.

2. Dont be late. dont be on time. get there early so you arent shuffling around when things get rolling.

3. Turn your cellphone off. Not vibrate, but off. And do this before you get there.

4. Stand quietly and dont try to push your way through or strain to see whats going on up front.

5. After the the third round of Taps, just turn and go home or back to the dorm. Everyone else will do the same. If you go with some people maybe say a few words or little prayer when you get back.


Thats about it. Even when I lived off campus, I always turned my lights off at my house. thats up to you, but if you live on campus, make sure to turn your lights off.

I have a BS in chemical engineering and a minor in chemistry, I have no pity on anyone who says they didn't have time in college.

I also worked 24 hrs every weekend and never missed a home football game.

Football games are fun, yell practice is fun, student organizations are fun. Silver Taps is not fun - its an obligation you owe as part of the Aggie family. I'm glad you are finally taking the time to participate. View this as similar to going home to visit grandma in the nursing home. Maybe not something you enjoy, but needs to be done. Could be you one day.

The sooner you accept that not all people here think that way, the better off you will be

New Army continually amazes me with the things they come up with.

Everyone should go to Silver Taps to pay your respects to your fallen comrade, and remember him/her. Silver Taps is not that long, but it is a somber, sobering ceremony for people that have left us way too soon.

The first part is extremely important. Stand quietly. That means no talking. This isn't social hour by the academic building.

Don't go because everyone else in your dorm is going. Go because it is important to you personally.

I remember a silver taps I went to as a freshman with my GF at the time. She was deathly allergic to ants carried an epi and all that. Anyway we go to taps and in the dark she ends up standing in a huge antpile. She is trying to get my attention and making all sorts of noise. I shushed her. Be respectful at Silver Taps.

She was ok she was just upset later. Meh

Hey folks, we got a first timer here!

I'll help as others have done already: the GB is like the men's locker room. I mean, if it's two good friends who see each other, while they would never say this in the workplace or in front of polite company, a simple "what's up homo?" replied with "just my **** for your mother" is all that's needed.

This will be my second Silver Taps honoring someone I knew, this time 2 people. I agree that the feeling of everyone standing for your friend is amazing.

I'm going to my first Silver Taps out of the Corps and as a Former Student to stand for Shawn and Tanner, the two fish cadets the FTAB marched without on my Final Review day.
