My retired neighbor was Special Ops. He has some good stories.

Before the Cuban missle crisis was a known crisis, they needed to find out if the Soviets were really there. My neighbor and another guy volunteered for the mission. They took off their dog tags and swam from a boat about five miles offshore up to a beach near a Cuban base. This was done at night.

They got close enough to the fence to hear men talking, and the men were speaking Russian. They swam back after that and delivered the news.

I worked at JSOC for 2 years. This "detachment" you refer to is not what you think it is. Its a logitics detachment if I remember correctly. There is lots of speculation surrounding JSOC but its not anything sexy, just harmless exercises and training events.
