I had a roomate move out in March, lease is not up 'til June 30. She paid part of the utilities up until this month when I noticed she left the bill on the counter after moving the rest of her stuff out. Not sure why she decided to stop paying since she is paying rent through the end of this month, but it's a cheap bill so I decided to cut my losses (and I have another person moving in, so it'll be back to half/half.

A friend of mine suggested the fact that it's climate controlled storage...therefore she is expected to pay half.

Lucky for her, I'm naturally cold all the time so the A/C wasn't turned on until May, meaning the bills were modest.

Threads like this are why I no longer laugh when I hear people say you should have a roommate contract.

You should have outlined everything with them from the beginning (i.e. who pays what and how much for any situation that would arise.)

Honestly you don't have to pay them ****, but it would be the right thing to pay them a small percentage of the bill.

Our electricity was only about $20/person in a typical month anyway.

I'm not the one complaining. I think the OP should pay at least some, though probably not a perfectly equal share. That's what I'm doing this summer as we have 1 roommate still in the apt while the other 3 of us are gone.

OP you should still pay,however, your share should be adjusted.

It's not that difficult a concept to grasp. You signed a lease which implied to your room mate that you would be there for the duration and thus be responsible for your share of all the bills. Obviously if you won't be there during the last couple of months then the electricity bill won't be as high as it would if you were there, but make no mistake, it's summer time in Texas, and you're really dumping on him if you don't own up to some responsibility.

Be the "better man" and offer him something.

I had a roommate in college who tried to pull this "I'm not paying" stunt. I got him an internship in Dallas, then he told me I was the only reason the electricity would be used for the summer since I was staying for summer school, so it was my responsibility.

I can count the number of times I've been more pissed off on one hand.

God if I do move back to CS, I'm doing it in a 1 bedroom or I'm moving in with old roommates that aren't completely arrogant/insane enough to think like a lot of y'all....

I lived alone my last semester and it was great.

Place was always clean and no room mates to deal with

If I move back it will be to stay to work. I really liked having roommates when they where good roomies, but I think it's privacy time LOL

One of our roommates left about a week ago, and the lease is until July. He's paying Cable/Internet, but we're not making him pay for electric.
