A few months ago I switched from driving a Tahoe to a Jetta. I was spending roughly $20 per day before...and I know this because of those broke day-before-paydays I would have from time to time when I would put $20 in and it was JUST get me to work and back. Now I can fill my car up for about $21 and it will last me all week.

7 miles each way.

~14 MPG

Fuel at $2.45/gal

~ 1 gallon/day

18 days (9-80's)

Total fuel cost: $44.10/month ; $529.20/year

So much nicer after having to commute 30 miles each way to the plant every day.

This does not include tolls - (2 each way each day) - $4/day * 20 days/month - $80/month and $960/year could be added to that.

This is assuming my worst MPG vehicle, daily driven (it's not anymore), with super-duper-premium gas @$2.70/gal @ 8.9mpg.

8 miles each way, on highway.

Monthly:$545.63 ($450/mo payment, $50 insurance)

Yearly:$6547.56

$122.50 in gas.

No car payment, and I'd be paying for insurance anyway.

I take the beltway, but there is no toll on the section (yet)that I drive on.

with everything mine is $766.28/mo, $9195/yr.

but putting in car note and insurance doesn't make sense unless you use this particular car ONLY for work.. So depending on how much your commute mileage is compared to your total mileage.. that can change. mine is about half and half.

so just gas and tolls:
53 miles commute round trip, 26 mpg calculated avg, ~2 gallons a day, ~$100 in gas for 20 day work month.
Tolls, I use 3.60 ea. way, so $144 a month.. $244 total.

however, to work i almost always exit i-10 feeder, since the BW8 feeder road goes over I-10 now w/o a light, and I'll ride the feeder to westheimer, that saves me $26 a month skipping westhmr. plaza, and on the way home, I typically ride feeder all the way until after 290, skipping westhmr and 290 plazas, saving me another $52 a month..

By doing that alt. route, I knock off $78 a month in tolls, bringing me down to $168 for gas and tolls.

But in reality, I vanpool, and I pay about $80 a month, plus the gas to our meeting place which is 8 miles round trip so that adds on another $15 a month.
