http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luby's_massacre

quote:
The Luby's massacre was an incident of mass murder that took place on October 16, 1991 in Killeen, Texas, United States when George Jo Hennard drove his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot and killed 23 people, wounded another 20 and then committed suicide by shooting himself. It was the deadliest shooting rampage in American history until the Virginia Tech massacre.

That was a couple of months after I moved to Texas. I have only eaten at Luby's once in my 18+ years here.

Very little as I didn't pay attention to such things at that time.

I do.

Some idiot at a Halloween party at school came dressed as, you guessed it, a Luby's employee with fake blood.

Tasteless.

wasn't this the one where the manager said if she had her CHL or was allowed to carry her gun in the restaurant she could have stopped him, or something like that?

This was pre-Texas concealed carry. Susanna Gratia Hupp was dining with her parents and left her gun in the glove compartment of her car. Both parents were killed. She became one of the faces of the concealed carry movement. She later became a state politician of some sort. Anne Richards vetoed the concealed carry law (maybe more than once), but W took over and it passed.
Something like that.

I think guns are good. <Rhynes>

I do remember all the spineless libs weeping, wailing, and gnashing their teeth that there would be massacres everywhere and shootouts in the streets everyday if the CHL law was passed.

Years later........still waiting.

You can find her testimony to congress on youtube. It's chilling. IIRC, the gunman walked back over to Hupp's mother who had refused to leave her dying husband.

For her efforts, she was executed.

I went to high school in Copperas Cove (where 6 of the victims lived) and was friends with the daughter of the first gentleman killed (he was an Aggie and his daughter as well) His name was Michael Griffith and he was a great Aggie, and our family’s veterinarian. When George Hennard drive his truck through the floor to ceiling glass window, Dr. Griffith rushed over to him to try to get him out of the truck. He thought the man had accidentally crashed into the building and might be hurt. When Dr. Griffith got next to the truck, the coward pulled his handgun out and pointed it at him. Dr. Griffith froze for a moment and actually started to put his hands up in retreat. Hennard showed absolutely no mercy or appreciation for this man’s courtesy and good intentions. He shot him at point blank range, killing him.

I remember it well. My grandfather had left that Luby's less than ten minutes before that guy drove his truck into it. Two of my grandfather's good friends were shot, one of them died.

She became a Republican State Rep. from Killeen, retired in 2006.

She drove the CHL legislation in the Texas House, and Aggie Jerry Patterson carried it in the senate.

i was 3, so i dont remember much, but that Luby's was about 5 blocks from my house in Killeen. I remember my mom calling from work and my grandmother rushing me in from outside and locking us in the house. I got to hear a first hand account of what happened my senior year from my sunday school teacher who was there and whose secretary was killed. Chilling stuff. All the events yesterday have Killeen reeling again

Luby's in Bell county should just pack it up.

I was stationed at FT Hood when it happened. I had eaten lunch there the week before. He seemed to have timed his attack to be after the time all possible soldiers would have to be back on Post, for work. That way there was less chance of a couple soldiers stopping him.

My grandfather died on that day (unrelated to the shooting) so whenever someone brings up the anniversary, i know how long it has been since i got to be with my grandpa.

I went to HS in Copperas Cove, graduated in '01. We went to a playoff game up in Dallas and the band was going to a Luby's for dinner. I would say about 90 percent of the band had never been inside a Luby's because of this incident. Some of them had parents who had specifically told them to never go to a Luby's.

Oh, and TampaBayAg, I have heard many great things about Dr. Griffith. Dr. Kunkel, who was his assistant at the time invited my Dad to join him in the practice after Dr. Griffith's passing and now my Dad owns his practice.

I was 7 years old at the time, but I remember the incident pretty well. The shooter lived in Belton on the same street about a block from my uncle. They knew each other, but that's not to say they were friends.
