This is a serious question. He's been in the spotlight for so long and pretty much owned the 80's and early 90's. You could probably go to a remote village in Asia or South America and start showing them pics of famous people and they'll all know Jackson.

Yeah as far as entertainers go...probably.

He's been an afterthought for the last 10 years.

depends on how you define, 'famous.' a whole lot of people know the name of the president of the USA, but might not like him.

jacko was probably the most famous entertainer but im not sure of most famous person.

Obama and George Bush surpassed him I think.

Famous not equal to popular.

I was just about to post that. After thinking about it, I bet Bush is the most recognizable figure in the world right now.

I bet more people know the name of Michael Jackson than any US president.

Michael Jackson #1
Tiger Woods #2
David Becham #3

on a global scale.

Muhammed Ali was the most recognized person in the world a few years ago, even in MJ's prime.
Tiger Woods and Obama might be the most recognized today.

Muhammad Ali is easily more recognizable than those three...

Post a picture of each (assuming the pic is of Ali in his prime), and Ali wins hands down...

Not in this country, with this young generation.

FPS i bet you are wrong. Even in America Ali is not more recognizable than any TW or MJ and maybe not DB as well.

I still don't think that kids in villages of South America know who Ali is. Millions of these kids live for soccer though and probably know who Obama is.

I was just pointing out even in this country, these kids don't know necessarily who Ali is from a picture. So why would the rest of the world their age know him on site as well?

If you've ever watched Jay Walking, you'll know how dumb Americans truly are.

t-cam the question is not recognizability (sp?) - it is about who is most famous. And no way George Bush or Barrack Obama are not more famous than any of the people you listed. Well, maybe Obama since he's only been Prez 6 months.

He sold out FIFTY concerts in London before this happened.

Recognizability=famousness...at least to me. And I'm never wrong.

More people had heard of George Bush than Michael Jackson until the last 4 hours, and I firmly believe that. As goodfield sort of stated, Jackson has been Jacko and not really relevant for 10 years. Think about it - whomever leads the US is the de facto leader of the free world and is the most powerful person on the planet - everyone talks about him/her.

Michael Jordan maybe? If he was wearing his jersey?

Now, I'll grant you that more people can pick Beckham out of a lineup than GWB or BHO, but that's not the question here...

Easily the most famous person in the world. And, imho, it ruined him.

He was a prisoner of fame who couldn't walk out the door without a crowd gathering. When he was touring in Japan he wanted to go shopping, so expert makeup artists did him up as a very elderly Japanese man. Didn't work.

See above. Despite not releasing anything in 8 years he was still by far the biggest celebrity in the world. I don't know why Americans always grotesquely underestimate how huge he was.
WC87

NOAC, he's huge, no doubt, but more famous than the US President? Hardly. More recognizable, yes.
