I had a problem with a dad that kept calling and wanting to gripe out my wife over her sending his kid to the office. The kid was a constant problem and the parents were in denial about the whole thing.

I would always answer the phone and tell him that she is not available and to not call again. He decides to lay in to me and I simply told him that if he called again I would be paying him a visit. He came back with, "so you think you are some kind of badass?" I simply told him that I could provide him with references from some of my Marine Platoon mates. He didn't call back.

I taked to parents in the evenings. I couldn't talk to them during my confrence period since I was always in the office. Yes, I do mean every day for like three weeks. Hince why I resigned.

A a public servent and employee of the state who's salary comes from property taxes, shouldn't you be open to outreach by parents anytime of the day or night?

If I knew my child's teacher was complaining about what hour I chose to discuss my child's school work I would haven them in a new class next am.

I must have been fortunate to have teachers who expressed how open and eager they were to speak with students or parents outside of class.

oh and troll

I have never minded parents call me at home at 7 pm or 7 am. I do mind someone calling after 9 pm. In your mind, should I be available at 3 am to discuss things?

Where is the time limit? That is the issue. Not that they are contacting me, because I have called parents at night, but that it is fairly late in work week evening. Do you really not see that? Would you rather I call earlier than 9:45 pm to discuss your child?

I was simply raised to never call someone's house after 9 pm unless it was an emergency.

Did you hand out a piece of paper the first day of class saying that you are free and open to calls until 9 pm but after this time you would appreciate it if you did not receive calls?

Sounds like you should have if you are going to complain about it.

Assuming everyone was raised this same way as your first mistake. You have to spell stuff like this out to parents.

actually, I sent home a piece of paper saying I am available at home in the early evenings for any discussions, but email was probably an easier way because I was on maternity leave.

Now, since you think I should be available always....should I take a 3 am phone call from a parent?

I have taken midnight phone calls from students when a major paper is due the next day and they have a legitimate question.

Good. But not everyone has the same schedule. What if said parent just got off of work at 9:30 when their child gave them this permission slip?

And yes, you are a public employee who's job begins in august and ends in may.

Shouldn't a teacher always have whats best for the student on their mind?

Maybe Mom works and doesn't get off until late in the evening. Not everyone can make personal calls at work.

We get calls here at all hours for my husband's job so I guess I'm used to it. If I were you, I'd probably make it clear what hours I am available for discussion and then not answer calls outside of those hours. If you answer, you are reinforcing the behavior and she'll call again late in the evening.

Mom can call in the morning if she works til 9.

It's rude to call someone at 9:30.

Tanya, you should have told her you would get back with her the next day, then call her at 4Am when you wake up to let her know the number of curse words in stupid book. I imagine at that time of the morning, she might have a few more to add to the list, ad she might understand where you are coming from.

To all you idiots trolling her about needing to be available 24/7, shut up. Jeebus. Teaching sucks and everyone knows it. Last thing we need to do is start trolling the precious few who choose to make that kind of choice into hating their job any more than they already might.

Oh, and Tanya, turn your home phone off (or the ringer off) after 9PM. Leave your cell on in case someone needs you for an emergency.

You just earned 3 BSC points in my book. My husband gets to work at least 45 mins early for students to come for tutoring/help with assigments. He has two conference periods where parents can meet with him. He stays after work until around 5:00 or 5:30. If you can't bother to contact him sometime between 6:30am and 5:30 pm, it obviously isn't that important. You do not have any right to call our personal home line or personal cell phones that the TAX PAYERS DON'T PAY FOR. You can call the school phone that you do pay for. You also don't have any right to show up at our house (like we had one parent to).

Uh ... sure. All parents have email .... especially the parents of the biggest trouble makers. Maybe in your world.

this would not be ok. i hope you understand the difference between me calling you at 9:30 and you calling me during work.

Wow. Just wow. Words cannot describe the stupidity of this statement. Your brat is wasting my wife's and 21 other kid's class time, and you're worried abour being called at work?

For the record, Teacher Wife '82 does not mind calls at home ..... as long as the are before 9:00 pm. I also will not take messages for her from parents. If they want to talk to her, call back later, or contact her at school. Yes, I am an ******* - not a school secretary.

Tanya,

At first I was a little perplexed that you don't want parents calling you at home. That seemed a little strange, but I guess that's your feelings on the matter. I was going to recommend that, if you truly don't want to be called at home, have your name removed from the phone book. My wife doesn't want her name listed, so the phone book just lists my name and no address.

But, if they called you late in the evening (and they are surely aware of your little one who's most likely asleep or trying to sleep) then I can fully understand. That is a little rude, especially if it's not an emergency.
