How many of you continue to keep up the CDL (for no real reason)? I do, just to say I have it.

aTm 2004 which route was the one that picked up at Melrose? GOD I HATED that route. Standing there while buses whizzed past you due to being overcrowded.

Hullabaloo I believe. The same thing happened on Aggieland when I drove that one.

Which one of you drivers hit the plane at easterwood while picking up/dropping off the football players?

I remember patching the roof where there was a large gash all the way down.

Crown, I have my CDL but seriouly need to get rid of it. You do realize that your bac is only allowed to be .04 not the normal .08?

Not that I condone DnD but that is less than a beer for some folks.

I dropped my CDL when I moved out of state and had to get a local license. I didn't want to pay the extra $60 to have the CDL especially since I won't be driving a bus in the near future.

also, CDL means no defensive driving for a ticket.

I remember that! I think that guy quit not too long after that.

The best charter I had was picking up the football team from Easterwood after we took Okie Lite behind the woodshed in '04. I drove the lead bus and had all of the big names and Frau...errr...Fran on my bus. There were a lot of people there to greet the team and Fran asked me to stop near the fans and told the team something along the lines of "those fans are who you play for and you need to let them know you appreciate them being here."

I drove from 99-02 as well. Still have my CDL, but kinda use it for work on rare occasions. Hard to get, easy to keep. I can say I have pretty much been all over Texas in an Aggie Bus (sometime sitting on the side of the road for extended periods!!)

i was on 56 or 57 when it caught fire during a charter, that was a fun experience....

Never got to drive the new buses.

IIRC 52 or 53 had a broken speed limiter, so you could go 70-75 on that one. I remember I drove a Sorority charter out of town on Friday, got back to CS Saturday morning at 4 AM, went home and went back to drive the game day shuttle, then sunday back to Bandera to pick up the sorority chicks again.

Those hills are scary when the air compressor can't keep up with the brakes, had to pull over and high idle it to get air pressure again.

Where did Wehner Express go?
How did 56/57 catch on fire? I remember 65 had zero oil pressure once at Wehner, I called it in, got out and there was oil all over the ground.

not exactly sure how it caught fire, but we were almost to easterwood on our way back from austin when it happened, so probably the long trip just taking its toll on an old bus...ive never seen people get off a bus faster

56 was a 1996 Model. I'd rather drive 43-53 on the road any way, they were Detroit Diesels.

So you've met PH too! Lynn is still here and so are most of the guys in the shop. Last I heard, they were trying to run off Finn because he was one of the highest paid drivers.

I loved driving!

I was the new girl who showed up one day to pick up shifts and got to break the out of town charter rule. I was hated on for a while after that. But I got to take the Corps to Bastrop, it was awesome.

I got an out of town charter to Fort Worth. In the same trip I head on hit a bird and got lost somewhere nowhere near Fort Worth, however I got the folks there on time.

I hated 01, dang that is a long route.

So far that is the only job that I had that I missed.

oops.

I also broke one of the new buses. Something about a part that costs thousands of dollars, must not have been too bad because I kept my job.

Oh back to the original question. I will keep up my CDL because I have gotten to drive a lot of other big trucks.

I loved driving buses and I still have my CDL. I haven't used it since, but I may use it again since I'm a teacher and I can use it for school trips.

Some of my best stories from college involve driving an Aggie bus. My students love the G rated versions I tell them.

I drove from 98-00. I hated those Bluebirds, one had a broken turn signal on the steering wheel that never turned off. I loved driving the short buses, hit the brakes and they bounced for days! I usually drove Old Army, it went through Deux Chene (sp?) apartments, down Longmire, up Deacon, and back down Welborn. Elephant Walk too, down Holleman, then a cross street to Southwest Pkwy. I actually missed the turn in to the Colony apartments once and then backed up in the middle turn lane to make the turn, then called in permission to do it later. I loved driving around the clock tower heading to the MSC. During training, my instructor made me do 15 circles around it, and when I hit the curb coming out of it, I had to go do more.

I also drove Traditions on campus, and while stopped at Kleburg, my front door fell off. Paratransit was the good gig, didn't sign on for those until my last summer though.

Only did a couple of charters. Drove one for women engineers to Astroworld, and I got to go in with them and ride all the rides all day. I also drove with 2 other drivers to pick up "trouble" kids from Prairie View A&M, and take them to Galveston for a field trip. After we dropped them off, the 3 of us raced back to campus, couldn't get past 65 though. Good times!

I kept my CDL for several years, though I finally dropped it last year, because I needed to take defensive driving. I loved having it, it was a conversation piece.

good stories... unfortunately i got hired on just before there were alot of changes were made and from what i hear things were near as fun as for some of yall. I drove jan05-oct06

The thing i hated on Excel more than picking up at the sororities was picking up all the people at the Cambridge. They were probably the rudest of any single stop on any route i drove.

One cool thing i figure out was on 117 (i think) the outside speakers hadn't been broken/disabled and i would play music while pulling up to a stop at 630 am. I would get some weird looks from people who werent quite sure if they were still dreaming or if music was really coming from the outside.

One of my favorite memories from driving:
One morning, driving the route up sorority row(I forget what it was called back then, it was about 20 yrs ago), there was only one passenger on the bus, sitting in the seat behind me. I stopped to pick up a girl at a stop by herself. I greeted her like I did everyone. She acted like such a c*** that the guy behind me even commented on how beetchy she was. She went all the way to the back of the bus to sit down and proceeded to apply lipstick. I told the guy behind me to hold on and watch. I hit the brakes pretty hard as she put the lipstick to her mouth and she ended up with a huge read streak across her face. The dude behind me almost peed his pants laughing. Good times.

Speaking of picking people up...am I the only one that would have an empty bus, pull up to 1 person at a stop while opening the front door just to have them walk to the back door? That always pissed me off! After the first few times, I just waited until they got it through their head that I wasn't opening the rear door for them. Then, if I really wanted to screw with them, I'd open the rear door when we got to campus and they're standing at the front door waiting to get off.

if they walked to the back door, i would just sit there with the front door open and wait for them to give in

I hated when people would do that!! The back doors on the nova would take forever to open/close plus it applied the parking brake. You could open and close the front doors while still moving and be gone that much faster. I definately had a few pissed off pasengers standing at a door I wouldn't open for them

Damn, I'm the oldest driver so far! I drove from '91-'94.

My favorite route (which I believe they got rid of after I graduated) was Traditions.

My sister & roommate were also drivers. Good times.

I always thought bus drivers were like the people that worked at Freebirds. Guess not.
