My vote is KVII in Amarillo.

Instead of showing the World Cup Final live this morning, the idiots decided to just tape it and show it later at 11 am.

I already sent them an e-mail telling them what a sorry bunch they are.

I think I'll set my tv set to just skip over their channel from now on.

KZTV 10 in Corpus Christi, They had the same two anchors for nearly 45 years. The station was recently sold and one of the two retired. So maybe they will finally get updated.

Agreed, Plum.If you've ever lived in the Corpus Christi Area, you'd know Channel 10 wins this award hands down. The new owners are gonna have to throw a lot of $$$ into this station to make it respectable.

Honorable Mention to KVEO, the NBC affiliate in the valley. Has NO news department. They don't even show the NBC Nightly news at 5:30.

Big cities don't have ANYTHING on small town TV stations.

Have you ever seen the news in the Temple/Waco/Killeen area?

Thank GOD for Channel 8 out of Dallas!

janag - I grew up near Waco, and we were always SO glad we could pick up the Dallas stations.

We are spoilied in Dallas. The stations are wonderful exclude Ch.11.

I will agree though with Corpus. We always went to Port Aransas for the summer and I remember watcvhing the news there and the news woman goes hi I'm (big pause like 30 seconds) so and so. Funniest thing I ever saw. I was like what u have to read a teleprompter for ur name.

I taped Marvin Zindler one time b/c when I said something about it up here no one really believed me. That man is truly representative of H town.

Ain't that the truth. I remember back when Ch. 4 switched to Fox and 11 became CBS. People were talkin' about how Ch. 11 would be great, but it has consistently stunk since then.

Ch. 11 was best when they were independent and had the 9 o'clock news (with meterologist Bob Goosman.. he was the man).

Channel 3 in College Station, sometimes it is Houston, sometimes it is the same as channel 9, sometimes it is the T.V. Guide channel, and sometimes it is porn (oh wait that is just when the VCR is left on by the roomy).

KZTV 10, Corpus Christi

quote:
CC Caller-Times
May 26, 2002

For nearly half a century, whenever news events have shaken the Coastal Bend, KZTV anchor Walter Furley has been on the air, chronicling the region's history. Furley's television tenure in thousands of South Texas living rooms has stretched from the completion of the Harbor Bridge in 1959 to the murder of Tejano star Selena in 1995 and beyond.

On May 13, the 73-year-old Furley publicly announced plans to retire from KZTV, after 45 years on the air at the CBS affiliate.

Eventually Furley brought computers to KZTV two years ago.

"I think maybe I was shamed into it. Now I don't know how I ever got along without a computer. It's just amazing. Yeah, it isn't always good to resist change, I guess," Furley says, breathing a deep sigh.

Inside the office, it's not long before his computer starts giving him problems."You know, I resisted computers," Furley says. "I used a Royal manual typewriter. I could type 120 words per minute."

At mid-afternoon, Furley edits a script written by reporter Catharyn Campbell, a recent Texas A&M University College Station graduate.

Personally, I miss seeing Eli from Allred Motors telling us about his credit problems and how people mistake him for being the owner and being rich.

Plum, let's not forget the day Gene Looper flipped the bird at the cameraman, thinking they were off the air.

My personal favorite was the day after an ice storm,Walter Furley was doing the weather and a huge chunk of ice fell off the tower and came crashing thru the roof while they were in the middle of the newscast. One could see the sun shining thru onto the news set. Walter made mention of it, saying something like "Oh, we just had a chunk of ice knock a hole in our roof" and kept right on going.

Channel 10 was always good for a laugh. I'm going to miss that.

aggie7902...

That is the agreement that KTRK has with our cable company. Cox will pick up KTRK when they are showing non-ABC programming, like Houston news. When they are running network programming, Cox is obligated to "protect" KRHD ABC 34 or cable channel 9.

Channel 6 in Waco is pretty damn awful. That old weather guy...I think his name is Andy...seems like a fear-monger.

Bull ButterYes, I remember the Gene Looper incident.

Do you remember the weatherman at KIII 3 in Corpus Christi named Charlie St. John. During his weather cast he would use a prop called "Barney the Weather Dog"?

They would show his doghouse and St.John would say,” Let’s see what Barney will be wearing tomorrow", then he would remove the doghouse and there would be this dorky cartoon dog dressed in shorts, coat or umbrella whatever was appropriate for the following days weather.

That guy lasted for 20+ years doing that.

Joe Gazen has been anchor at KIII 3 for close 30 years.

Walter Furley would show kids where Santa Claus was on his weather radar at Christmas and if everything was to scale Santa was the size of China.

I wonder what happened to Destry Jatton she used to be on in Waco. ALways wondered where the hell do u get that name from.
Bull Butter
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Plum, I remember Charlie St.Johnn. He always started off the weather cast with "Good Evening Dear Hearts, let's talk about weather!"

Barney the dog was used by Tom Nix, who replaced Albert Flores, who replaced St. Johnn. Albert only lasted a few months with Channel 3 before moving on to KENS-5 in San Antonio, where he still is today.

Joe Gazin started with Channel 3 in about 1977. He has not aged a bit since then.

I don't live in the CC area anymore (moved to the valley in 1990). My folks live in Rockport but they only watch channel 6 now because my nephew-by marriage is a meterologist on 6 (Matt Terhune, he's an Ag!). He works as an understudy to the legend Dale Nelson.

BaitShack nails it once again.

Second place used to be KJAC when it was in Port Arthur. Their equipment had to have been held together with bailing wire. It always seemed to break on Sunday afternoons in the fall right when a good AFC game (or an Oilers game) was coming on.

Channel 6 out of Temple/Waco has got to be the all time worst. It easily holds the record for most technical difficulties. I grew up watching them because we couldn't get cable in the country.

Has anyone tried to watch that new station in B/CS? I love their sports reports....it's just a shoulders-up shot of a person standing in front of a PICTURE of Kyle Field. My God, is this shot in somebody's rec room??? What's their backdrop budget? 30 bucks at Inspirations?
Charlie Hodge
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yea, I've watched that station. The sports and weather persons are retreads from the Waco station. Actually, I think both the weather guys used to be there.

BTW...I miss John Brant (sp?)...the anchor from KBTX who got demoted to the health scene reports. I think I'm the only one in the city who misses him, though.

John Brent couldn't read, and he did precious little to actually learn about this market, which is what any good reporter should spend a lot of time doing.

He is serving out his contract, which will not be renewed.

CSAF...

Yea, but he was damn clever...I'm going to miss those little nuggets he used to close the newscast with.

Seriously though, he did stammer too much, but I still think he has a great on-air voice. Nothing against Joe Brown, but his voice is a little too chicken fried for my tastes.

Brent did run Jenni Lee off though.

Brent's background is in radio. This is his first TV gig, I believe.
