Yea. I remember when they made a big deal about Nick Saban saying it a few years ago on the phone. I didn't know what the big deal was. It's just a more specific term for rednecks from the swamp.

Having grown up in S. LA. and gone to undergrad there in the state - no, I don't think it is a slur.

Of course I had a boss from IL tell me it was racist to call some migratory workers around here, Mexican. It's all in your perception I guess...

My mom was married to a Bubba Quibodeaux, before my dad. It doesn't get much more coonass than that.

I've spent a lot of time in Southern Louisiana and I've always heard the definition of coonass is half french and half black.

In my experience, the folks that actually live out on the swamps are proud to be called that. As you move into the cities, it's seen as derogatory.
