I call my buddy, who happens to be black and from louisiana, that all the time and he always finds it amusing when i call him and other LSU fans that. He usually just retorts with me being a redneck.

I was born south of I-10 in Louisiana. We use coonass like some use redneck. Its not a color but an attitude/lifestyle. Of course my family knows how to laugh at itself and is the source of most of the cajun/coonass jokes I know. Others may be more uptight about it.

If you aren't part French you ain't coonass, no matter where you grew up imo.

Boudreaux, Thibodeaux, Dauphine, Douget, etc...all coonass. Smith, Jones, etc usually not. There are exceptions of course.

And no, not an insult.

I worked in east texas for amoco the summer between my freshman and sophomore years. There was a contract gang pusher who was cajun-and the first I ever heard use the term coonass-and he used it a lot. Since then, I've used the term perhaps three times to people from Louisiana-and always have gotten this uncomfortable, I shouldn't use that term kind of feeling from my audience. So, I don't ever use it anymore.

It is not racist. It can be derogatory or complimentary, depending on who says it and in what context.

Strictly speaking, Dax is correct that you ain't coonass less'n you got French blood, but more casually, it's just a particular flavor of redneck.
