Our soon to be property has a cattle guard at the gate and I'll be needing to remove it. How do I do that? I haven't the first friggin clue.

why do you need to remove it?
Find someone with a front bucket on a tractor (or a forklift). Dig around the base of it and then let them do the rest. I would post it for sale on the Outdoor Board or craigslist. Someone would come get it Im sure.

My parents want it. And considering I don't need it, I was going to give it to them.
I wouldn't do that. You'd have no barrier against cows! That'd be insane!
Seriously UnCover. Don't take it out. It serves as a good gate and it would cost way more to remove it then back fill in the dirt to get it level and add a new gate.

If you put a couple hereford cows out there, you can get ag exemption.
Tractor with a front bucket would be best. That is how we installed ours.

that just means you would have to put in a gate. seems like more hassle to me...

He would only have to put up a gate if he was going to have cows or other livestock, which I assume since he is removing the cattle guard, he will not.

More hassle than what it's worth. Just leave it in unless your parents really need it.
Would your parents wanna buy one? I have one at my ranch in Iola that our oil company replaced. I can talk to my family and see if they'd sell it for cheap...
1) I thought my parents could use since they actually do have cattle.
2) The property at one time had cattle, but no longer does. I haven't considered actually purchasing a few to get the exemption, so that's something I'll look into.

I only purchased 2.9 acres. That's not exactly alot.
the ag exemption is a wonderful thing, I would pursue it.
Plus, if managed correclty, you will have fresh steak on hand at all times.

Because normal people don't leave their property open for anyone to drive on in. I assumed this was common sense but I guess not.

Buying fill dirt to fill in hole,
Possibly renting/hiring steam roller to compact dirt(could be done by the other things )
replacing the gate, unless you want people to be able to come on to the property at will.
with replacing the gate you are looking at gate cost and building cost.

You have to remeber, the "property" is only 3 acres, we aren't exactly talking about a 10,000 acre ranch in Brewster county here.
Yeah, but you can probably run the same number of cattle on 3 acres in Brazos county as you can on 10,000 in Brewster.

Cattle guards usually have a gate locking mechanism associated with them. Unless it is cattle guards between pastures owned by the same person.
I don't think I would have to rent the equipment. My brother-in-law has a big-ass tractor that I think can do the job. My Dad and him are starting a ranch here in Texas (about 100 acres to start) and would like the cattle guard. I guess if they want it, they can load up that big-ass tractor and pull it out and then backfill it for me.

No I have not. In fact, except for college and a brief time afterward, I have lived my entire life with a cattle guard.

and it is not that expensive to remove it if he has access to a tractor (I did this about a month ago on my land). No need for backhoe or steam roller. Just get some buddies and some shovels. Compact it with a truck. Dirt is only cost.

I agree with Splinter.
It appears that a lot of people on this thread really don't know what a cattle guard is
It's that thing on the front of your truck....
