(fify protected!)

Does anybody know the best way to truly get rid of/prevent them?

Yesterday, my roommate had a welt on her arm that itched and looked like a mosquito bite, only bigger and more spread out. She saw this right after she woke up from a nap.

So she washed her sheets yesterday afternoon, and today had another bite on her arm and one on her leg. She said that she saw 4 dead bugs in her bed, but I don't know what they looked like or anything. So they may not be actual bedbugs, but it makes the most sense- after Christmas break, our apartment manager sent out an email saying that bedbugs had been in a lot of local apartment complexes and the dorms.

She left town for the weekend, but I'm concerned about them getting into my bed. So does anyone have any advice? I've done some reading on the internet, but haven't really been able to make sense of any of it.

If they are in your apartment, they are already in your stuff or about to be. The only way to get rid of them is to treat the entire complex or move. A friend of mine went through a very bad situation like this in CS.

Seriously, bed bugs are apparently becoming more and more frequent again.

Usually the bites come in sets of three.

If you have them bad enough, you should be able to lift the mattress and see the nastiness.

Other tell-tale signs are brown spots on the mattress or sheets (actually little blood spots).

Getting rid of them apparently isn't very easy either and spreading them to other households is supposedly very easy as they love to hitch rides on clothes, luggage, etc...

Call a good exterminater. Bed bugs are tough to get rid of. Talk to your apt. manager to see what they did.

You can buy some mattress covers that will prevent them from getting into the mattresses.

Good luck.

Apparently none of that will work. You have to either heat the bugs to above a certain temperatures or freeze them. My friend had to put all his clothes in a rented freezer to kill them.

Don't eat or drink anything with high sugar (glucose) content....

....The bed bugs like their blood sweetened and not stirred...

But before you do any of that, I would highly recommend making SURE it's bedbugs otherwise you're gonna waste a lot of time & money. Catch one, take pictures and email a prof, or store it in alcohol and bring it up here.

Uh oh. This isn't looking too good. I didn't realize they were so hard to get rid of.

And thanks for the info, aggiebugchick. I'll see if I can go into her room later and see anything.

HOLY CRAP! I would bet my son's bites are bed bugs then...he wrote the other day that he had several sores on his arms, legs and body and he thought they were bites but didn't pustule up like ant bites(like I thought they probably were)

He is bad about eating at his desk or on the bed and I thought ants came in and were feasting on his crumbs and then his body.

I will head down there and check them out!

Several of the apartment complexes behind the Northgate area are known to have them.

he even bought cortisone cream and Benadryl cream because they are so itchy!

Would his complex office verify if anyone else has a problem....this has been SINCE he came back two weeks ago!!!

We had bed bugs in my old apartment. When we moved to the new place, I first got the apartment complex to spray for bed bugs, and then washed all my clothes in bleach. Finally, got some kind of white powder (apparently a bug killer) from a friend, and put it in all the corners and between my mattresses.

It sure was a pain to have the bed bugs in the old place, so we've been extra careful to avoid them this time. Been pretty lucky so far, but my roommate was attacked early last semester in his room. Had to throw out his bed.

The apartment complex that my friend lived in refused to fix the problem and when he told them he was moving out, they wanted to charge him money for breaking his lease.

I lived in Casa Del Sol. That is where almost every apartment had bed bugs problem, and the management was horrible so they really didn't do anything.

Mom, I haven't heard about any specific complexes. My manager just said that they had been found in some, and advised that we not let people into our bedrooms if they live in the dorms or reported having bedbugs. We live in MidTown- I haven't heard anything about other people in the complex having problems. My roommate's bf lives at Meadow's Point, I think, that would be the most likely place that she would have picked them up (if they are in fact bedbugs).

MasterAggie- I ain't friends with no nasty skanks!

I think that is where my friend lived as well. He pointed it out to us but I don't remember the name. I know it was at the very least, in the same area as those apartments.

Blair, MidTown or Meadow's Point? MidTown is on Holleman off of Texas and Meadow's Point is near Holleman and Wellborn.

Sorry, my post was meant it response to Apu. My friend lived in Casa Del Sol or near it, not over in the place you are talking about. Bad timing.

I read about them because I thought we had bedbugs one time (kept waking up with mystery bites). Apparently if the infestation is bad enough you are best off to just throw away your mattress. Google bed bugs and whatnot to see what they look like.

Sleep tight.

he sent me pictures of his sores this week and I can't find the email they were in....we have to be careful with staph so he was aware of these places and how "gosh awful" they itched

my head is spinning! we made it through diapers, potty training and driving and never had pin worms, scabies or STDs to deal with so I suppose I will make it through bed bugs!

I'm thinking that if there's a bug infestation and the apartment refuses to treat that you can probably get out of your lease.

Mom, if you can find the pictures I can tell you if they look like the bites on my roommate.

And I like your positive attitude! Keep me updated on the situation...
