I have noticed in Houston that cops always leave their car running. Even when they go into a resteraunt to eat they leave it running. Is there a reason for this? Looks like a waist of tax money to me and they do this just because they can. Another reason I hate cops.

in case of emergency and on duty, they can get up and take off with little time.

They have to leave their cars running all the time because their donut and coffee warmers require so much power.

To power all their equipment running. They have computers ect that would kill the battery if left on, and they don't have time to start up everything if an emergency comes up.

The amount of gasoline consumed by idling police cars is dwarfed by the amount of gasoline wasted by soccer moms driving massive SUVs

I usually don't leave mine running when I am eating unless it is exteremly cold. I do leave it running while I am on calls and traffic. I have a lot of equipment that puts a large load on the battery. I have 3 radios, camera, microphones, computer, and various other electronics wired up that pull power from the battery.

Since Houston uses pool cars and not take home units, most officers probably don't know how good the battery is in the unit they are driving.
