Pinkin de Corozal, the professional volleyball team of A&M's legendary outside hitter Laura Jones, used a three game sweep to down Leonas de Ponce in Wednesday night's Championship Semifinal Series. With the victory, Laura and her team advance to the Championship Series, beginning this Sunday, April 16th, against the Gigantes de Carolina. Laura had 14 kills, 3 blocks, and an ace for the evening.
The Federacion Puertorriquena de Voleibol is a destination for many of top NCAA players after graduation. Each team is allowed two foreign reinforcements, or refuerzos. Laura's compatriot on Corozal is Olympian and 2004 NCAA National Player of the Year Ogonna Nnamani.
The Leonas de Ponce featured the tremendous talents of April Ross, a 4 time All-American who was a member of USC's 2002 and 2003 national championship teams. This weekend's Final against las Gigantes de Carolina will see Jones and Nnamani matched up against UCLA all-star Kristee Porter and Illinois grad Rachel vanMeter. During season play, Corozal is 3-4 against Carolina, with losses in the last two meetings.
Laura, a split second before another monster kill:
