After a long 3 week break, our distance crews are finally back in action and this time staying home for the Arturo Barrios Invitational. After running up in the Meadowlands three weeks ago, the Ags are back on their home course which will also be the sight of the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. What a field convening on Watts today, we get to see plenty of our regional foes as well as talent from across the nation.
Last time out, the Aggies ran against a loaded field at Princeton. The rough conditions saw the Aggies place 12th on the women's side and 13th on the men's side. Debora Cherono led the way on the ladies side in 25th, Megan Roberts 44th, and Alexandra Fox 52nd. On the men's side it was Jack Johnston finishing 20th in the stacked field. Only one other Aggie finished in the top 100, (Gavin Chapa - 90th). The Aggies were without Michael Moiben and Carter Gordy.
With one regular season meet remaining, we hope we get to see either or both of Moiben and Gordy as the two when healthy would provide a huge scoring boost for our men. Both our scheduled to run, however we know how McRaven always enters people who won't run. So we'll have to see who lines up. On the women's side, we saw a full healthy lineup last time out, however sophomore standout Sophia Bendet was seen in a boot and crutches in a recent team photo. After having her track season cut short as well, you have to hope it's nothing major, so send prayers and best wishes her way.
As such, McRaven still has all the women entered to run, I assume the other 9 are healthy and we'll get to see them lineup. I'm interested to see how grad students Kennady Fontenot and Emma Little continue to progress as they get more acclimated after their injuries. I'm also interested to see how Cherono fares against such a talented field where she will run against much of her regional competition. Can Roberts, Fox, and freshman Laney Barnes continue their excellent seasons against big and talented field. On the men's side I hope we see Moiben and Gordy lineup. We've yet to see our men near full strength. With this talented of a field, I'd hope we'd have most of our team out there.
The competition will be crazy. Regional foes Arkansas (women only), Tulane, SFA, tu, Houston, LSU, Corpus, CBU (men only), and others will be in attendance. However nationally strong teams such as Eastern Kentucky, Arizona State, and Ohio State will also be in the field. Most notably also in this race will be D2 power Adams State. They have a strong program yearly with elite runners. (And where my friend won a national championship for lol). We will see plenty of elite runners and elite times today. The Arkansas women have a stacked lineup, as does Eastern Kentucky, Tulane, LSU, Adams State, SFA, Corpus, and many other talented individuals. Eastern Kentucky has a near full international lineup on the women's side. On the men's side they only have one runner, as does Texas Tech, however expect both near the top. The Arkansas women have been dealing with injuries as well so we'll see who lines up for them. SFA won't have their complete men's team either.
I'm glad we get to see our distance crews back in action! This is our last chance to run before conference and regionals are on deck. It's our home course and it's time to put on a show. Let's hope for an injury free, but fast race. The competition is great so let's hope we're running strong. Hope the 12th Man is out there supporting our runners because they absolutely wholeheartedly deserve it!
