Dark Horse: Kyle Rutledge (Pitt State)

I just don't trust Trev… he's gone after assistants in baseball, swimming, soccer, he's allowed women's basketball to sink into the ground and irrelevancy, he allowed soccer to fall way behind what they once were… money is what matters to him, not winning… I am terrified with him making this next move. I love this program deeply and don't want to risk falling behind because we couldn't get a big coach and settled for an assistant.

The portal closes Friday and we allegedly have had our coach for weeks, yet no announcement has been made. So our people will be given 30 days, and the athletes at the coaches school that we got them from will get 30 days (if it's the head coach)… if they're not in the portal by Friday, then they can't enter.

I really like our assistants on staff. I wouldn't want someone to completely overhaul our staff

Since becoming the head coach of the Pittsburg State University cross country and track & field programs on June 7, 2021, Rutledge has led the Gorillas to 10 NCAA Division II National Championships and 23 MIAA crowns program-wide. In January 2025, his title was updated to Director of Cross Country/Track & Field.

The Pitt State men placed third overall at the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, before claiming nationals titles during the 2022 outdoor season, 2023 indoor season, 2023 outdoor campaign, 2024 indoor season, 2024 outdoor season, 2025 indoor season, 2025 outdoor season and 2025 indoor season an amazing string of eight consecutive national championships entering the 2026 outdoor campaign.

This is a hire I could get behind…

They seem to have a very solid overall athletic department for their division. They've had a lot of football success too.

My biggest concern is how this typically works with others on the staff, we have some that have run programs & other really good ones...

I do believe in the Ereng effect..
