It's time. Time to lay it all out on the track, the runway, the throwing circle, one chance to leave it all out there and do what you can for your school. The nation's best are in Oregon this week for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Aggie man are your reigning national champions and are on a mission to secure a consecutive title, while our women are trying to improve upon their 3rd place finish from a year ago.

The Aggies lead the way for most entires combined with 17 women and 16 men. No women's team has more and the men are only behind Arkansas (21). It's not always the most important thing, but it's better going into a battle with more ammo. You have the entries, now it's time to do some damage and get people into position to score. This meet is 4 days, men kick things off Wednesday, then women, then the men, then the women.

Like regionals had the first round then the quarterfinals. For all races aside from the 5k and 10k, there will be the semifinals and finals. The semifinals will be 3 heats of 8 and the final will be 9 athletes. The heats are slotted based on performances in the quarterfinals, this leads to loaded heats and some easier heats, but that's just the game. For every race 800 and below, the top 2 in each heat will automatically advance then the next 3 best times will conclude the finals. All that matters for the running events are getting into that final and giving yourself an opportunity at some points. Similar situation for field events, except finals are right after the prelims.

On the men's side of things, Arkansas rolls in as the heavy favorites. Teams like us, Oregon, Georgia, and Auburn are waiting for Arkansas to slip and capture the glory. Arkansas is led by their dynamic sprinter Jelani Watkins who is projected to win the 100/200 and put them in position to score big in the 4x100. They have a solid 400 runner and they went 1-2 in the 800 indoors. They also have two strong distance runner in Brian Masai and Ernest Cheruiyot who are projected to score big, and a great high jumper. Oregon is full of distance stars and has some strong throwers. Georgia is loaded on the 4x400 and 400 with a strong hurdler and field event athletes. Auburn is loaded in the sprints with 5 in the 100, and Ja'Kobe Tharp in the 110 hurdles.

Our men's team is very top heavy. We have the national leaders in the javelin in Zaza Nnamdi and the 400 hurdles in Ja'Qualon Scott. Also in the top ten is Peter Narumbe in the 800 and our 4x400 both number 5, Etoro Bassey sixth in the high jump, and Scott 8th in the 110 hurdles. A wildcard is Aleksandr Solovev who is ranked outside the top ten, but hasn't jumped his best this outdoor season. He won this meet last year and was second at the indoor nationals. We need to make sure our big dogs score! Getting those 10 and 8 and 6 points are critical and make a huge difference. Now what is equally important is getting more points. Every single point matters and we're going to need our other entires to step up. We're going to need some huge PB's, people rising to the occasion. Plenty of our field event athletes are capable of getting some points if they have a great day. At a meet like this, many will fold, many have mishaps, the opportunity to move up these rankings and score are always there.

On the women's side Georgia is a big favorite, albeit not as much as Arkansas on the men's side. Georgia is led by sprinting phenom Adeajah Hodge, a sub 49 400 runner in Dejeana Oakley, a strong 400 hurdler in Michelle Smith, two loaded relays, and a couple shot putters. They are too heavy and will score big barring disasters. There's a close race behind them between Florida, us, Oregon, USC, and SC.

For our women's teams it's been a bit of an unusual year. 2 of our best athletes who won a gold and a silver at this meet last year transferred out, Winny Bii in the winter, and Sofia Yakushina a week ago. One of our big time transfers Adriana Tatum has been injured and wasn't able to compete this season. However there have been plenty of great. Our seniors have been so great this year. Our versatile sprinting phenoms Camryn Dickson and Jasmine Montgomery are back again at this meet to contest 4 events: 100, 200, and both relays. Hurdler Jaiya Covington is back after finishing 2nd last year and 3rd indoors. After missing 2025, Katelyn Fairchild is back. She placed 3rd in 2023. Our women's 4x100 and 4x400 are both ranked 7th and it would be huge if we improve on that. We also need some help from Deborah Cherono who's behind the big PB she set at this meet last year and our field event athletes like Morgan Davis in the long jump and Abigail Martin in the discus.

This meet is always must see television. It's also a lot more entertaining knowing we have two strong teams that are both in contention to be on the podium. While our men don't have the same odds of winning again as they did going into it last year, one thing about is this meet is that anything can happen. For one team the stars will align and all goes right. Pat Henry always says you just have to hope that all our athletes have the best day on the same day. Let's go BTHO everybody and add to our trophy case!!!!!!!!!

Heat wise, I think Peter Narumbe is in the toughest 800 heat with Colin Sahlman, Allon Clay, and Tinoada Matsatsa. So let's hope that's a fast heat. I think Reese Sharman-Newell got the easiest heat so let's hope he can get into that top 2 position. Ja'Qualon Scott has an easy 400 hurdles heat but is in a strong 110 hurdle heat that has 4 of the top ten. Kimar Farquharson will be in a tough 400 heat, but I like how our 4x400 heat.

For our women, the sprinting heats will always be tough and cutthroat. But I like Dickson's 100 and 200 heat chances. Jasmine Montgomery is in a loaded 100 heat so maybe she can get in on time, I like her 200 heat as well. Jaiya Covington is in a strong heat in the 100 hurdles but I like her chances. I think Debora Cherono is in the toughest steeple heat, but it's great that she's in the second and final heat. As for our relays, we're ranked 3rd in each heat. Our women will be in lane 6 for the 4x100 with LSU on their outside and Clemson on their inside. The 4x400 is in the same heat with Arkansas which will run away with it, but there will be a big battle between LSU, Kentucky, and us for second, but again thankfully that's the last heat

Day 1 Preview

We have arrived! It is NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MEET DAY! Hope is at its highest, confidence is bursting, it's time to step on that track and leave it all out there for Texas A&M University! Every practice in the unbearable heat, every challenging weight room session, every meet, every rep all leads to today. The rehearsal's over and today is time for the grand finale to commence!

Today is Day 1 of 4 and today is all about the men! There will be five field events and the 10,000 meter run that will be scored today and 10 semifinal races on the track, as well as the decathlon. Aggies will have 5 competitors in 4 field event finals today looking to score points: Henry Zimmerman (weight throw), Aleksandr Solovev (pole vault), Zaza Nnamdi (javelin), Sam Hankins, (javelin), and Khybah Dawson (long jump). All I see our opportunities to score and 5 seniors looking to leave a big mark on their coveted Texas A&M careers. All times on the live results link are Pacific Standard Time.

As always, a national championship meet begins with the multi's and in the Decathlon will be none other than our very own, Blake Harris. When you think multis you think 3 or 4 events every meet, sometimes 2 multis a year. However, for Harris it's been an unusual season. He had an unbelievable season indoors that saw him set two PB's in the heptathlon back to back before just missing out on scoring at nationals. After about a month off, he went straight into an early decathlon, his first in two seasons and scored nearly 300 points over his PB, despite only 3 having 3 pb's out of the 10 events and was far from usual self. He'd only compete in 2 throwing events 3 weeks later and sit out conference. So 1 decathlon, 2 individual events as he's been battling an injury. He was able to qualify to the field of 24 with the 19th best decathlon score. However he's 100 points away from 7th and as we all know, anything and I mean anything can happen in a decathlon. Just finishing the grueling 10 events is an accomplishment in itself. Every year at this meet there's multiple athletes unable to finish, so getting to that 1500 meters and crossing the line is always priority one. That comes with staying healthy throughout and getting a mark in all 6 field events. A healthy Blake Harris can score and I know there was so much left out on the table after his one decathlon. I pray and hope he's healthy. However not going into this 100 percent will be a challenge so let's hope for the best, but most importantly good health. Today's 5 events kicks off with the 100 at 3 o clock. Let's get that first huge time and go from there.

The first field event of the day is the men's weight throw at 4:30. Henry Zimmerman goes in with the 13th best PB. However he is about 3 meters back from the top 8. It is a championship meet and pb's don't matter. What matters is who shows up today. Hammer can be an inconsistent event, fouls happen frequently. So what matters is just putting yourself into position to get into the 9 man final. Zimmerman is the first thrower in the first flight. Time to go set the tone, win that first flight, and make the final! In his one and only year here at Texas A&M, Zimmerman has shown he's a competitor.

At 7:35 and during the early action on the track will also be the men's pole vault where reigning champion Solovev will compete for the Aggies. He's only done a few meets this year. 5 weeks after placing second at indoor nationals and going over 19 feet, he took two clean attempts in meet one before retiring from the competition. In meet 2 he goes 18 feet before skipping all the way to 18'10 where he missed. Then came conference where he cleared 17'8 and 18'2 before missing his three attempts at 18'6 uncharacteristically. Then he took one attempt and qualified for the national finals 2 weeks ago lol. So he comes into the meet ranked 11th with an 18'2 season's best. Last year he won with an 18'11.5 and he went 19'0.25 at indoor nationals. He vaults high when it matters and I have faith he can get back to a huge height despite not doing so this outdoor season. Two guys have cleared 19+ this outdoor season, Matthew Gray of Akron and Anthony Meacham of Kansas. Ismaila Sawaneh of Tennessee and Dyson Wicker of Nebraska will be a challenge as well. Misses matter so let's hope for a clean slate and a high jump! Points here would be enormous.

At 8:15 will be the javelin and the final collegiate performances for Sam Hankins and Prosper Nnamdi. Both have been to this meet 3 other times and both missed this meet last year due to injury. Nnamdi comes into the meet ranked first as he has all season. His PB is just inches ahead of the pb's of Keyshawn Strachan of Nebraska and Jordan Davis of Georgia. All over 84 meters, however Strachan has a season's best of 81.86 and Davis at 80.38. I think Nnamdi's best throw is ahead of him. Hankins has placed 5th and 9th in 2023 and 2024 always seeming to throw his best at this meet. If we can get 10 points from Nnamdi and some points from Hankins we will in amazing shape.

At 8:40 will be the long jump. Like Zimmerman, Dawson goes into the meet ranked 13th in the field. His best is 26'0.25. However long jump comes down to not just inches, but centimeters. Usually those who come into this meet and get a PB will be in line to score. So let's hope Dawson can jump his best! Last year 25'6 made the finals, I expect that to climb a little this year, but this event is always unpredictable. Fouls happen and can change everything. Dawson is in flight one so let's go get a huge jump and get into that final, then anything can happen.

Things on the track kick off at 7:05, however it'll be about an hour till an Aggies lines up. At 8:08 in the 3rd heat will be Ja'Qualon Scott in the 110 hurdles. Last year Scott would false start in this race despite having one of the fastest times going in. Scott hasn't ran his best in the 110's this year and still comes in ranked 8th. However due to times ran at the regional meet he is placed in a TOUGH heat with 3 guys who have ran faster this season. So the heats will be a bloodbath, but you can't ever count out Scott. He's a competitor and I know he's saved his best for this weekend. Get into that final and I know he'll score big!

Right after will be the men's 100 featuring David Foster. The grad transfer from Cal Berkley is running his heat out of late and will need another huge best to get into the final. His best this year is 10.09 that he ran last race. However, in his heat is 3 guys who have gone sub 10. Foster does have a wind aided best of 9.91 he ran in 2024. Let's hope we see that Foster and that he can surprise people and get into that final.

Next will be the men's 400 where the Aggies will have Kimar Farquharson and Eric Hemphill III. I'm not sure what was in the air at the East Regionals where nearly all 12 qualifiers got a PB, but this event is the fastest it's ever been with with 16 men going under 45 seconds, a feat that used to be rare in college. Farquharson has a best of 45.18 and Hemphill III 45.56. Will the East runners come back down or will we need huge PB's from our guys. Farquharson's in a tough heat with a 43.99 and 44.02 runner in that heat so let's hope they can carry Farquharson to a fast time. This event has changed and an event we used to own has improved rapidly, so we gotta improve as well.

Next up will be the men's 800 which will feature freshman phenom Peter Narumbe and grad transfer Reece Sharman-Newell, the former D2 1500 champ. Narumbe soared out to a huge time of 1:44.65 at regionals despite a poor start. Two of the heats have 2 top ten runners, Narumbe's heat has 4, so it's absolutely the toughest heat. It has Colin Sahlman who's the indoor collegiate record holder, Allon Clay and Tinoda Matsatsa who've both ran under 1:45. So Narumbe will need to run his heat which I know he's capable of. The top 2 in each heat automatically advance then the next 3 best times so Farquharson needs to stay up top and finish strong like he always does. Sharman-Newell is in the final heat which two top ten runners, first and ninth. Sharman-Newell has the 3rd fastest time in the heat and has a chance at getting a top two spot. He looked strong last time out and we'll need more of the same! Getting two into the final would be enormous!

Next up will the final individual event of the night for the Ags and it'll be race number 2 for Ja'Qualon Scott, the 400 hurdles. Scott is still nation's leader in the event with a time of 48.22. He had a rough race at conference, but easily won both his heats at regionals without breaking a sweat. Each year in this race he's ran a huge PB, I'm expecting something huge from him Friday, although it should be smooth sailing today for Scott with two guys in his heat who have ever gone sub 49, .7 away from Scott's best.

Last on the track will be the 4x400 prelim which has the Ags in heat 2 with the fasted time of the heat. While the Aggies cruised at the regional with an easy qualification, the east side saw faster times battling it out. Right behind the Aga are Big 10 teams Ohio State and Purdue. It should be a 3 team race but Farquharson on anchor should get it done for the Ags. We need this relay into the final as it presents a big scoring opportunity for us. Even without a healthy Lawson Jacobs, the quarter of Farquharson, Hemphill III, Musa Isah, and Demarco Escobar have been running well. Isah and Escobar will be fresh, and it's to be determined if the other 2 will be fresher for Friday night if they don't make the 400 finals.

It all starts today. It's time for the Aggies to run, jump, vault, and throw their absolute best. The road to a back to back title begins today. Arkansas is the overwhelming favorite, but in a meet like this, anything can happen. One false start, one baton drop, one foul out, can shake the entire outcome for the team standings. Let's hope all our guys have their best day today and let's BTHO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!

Finishes last in the long jump, it's gonna take a huge bounce back to get close to scoring or his PB… it's so hard to see because it's back to back years where we haven't been able to see Blake Harris at full strength outdoors… Him not having anymore indoor eligibility should do him wonders.
