I think they finally figured out the womens 5000m. It was a mess if you ask me with the leader lapping I think nearly everyone. It through people off and no official was letting all the lapped athletes know. I am not sure how that works if y ou have to keep up with the laps yourself or not. I imagine most are not used to be a lap down with this many good runners.

Sucks for many of them with DNF

You bet, it gets much louder.

There's an official at the start line that checks off the laps. Generally, they'll let you know how many laps to go, but it'll be too much for them to let you know where the leader is and if they've lapped you once or twice, etc. - that's on the coach.

I think in general if you have a 30-40 sec PR you should be suspicious

That wasn't the question, but I know what you mean.

Seemed to have a whole group of officials checking off laps at start/finish line. I can understand how it could get confusing with that many on a indoor track.

Day 1 Recap!

Our Aggies were off to a booming start Thursday in front of the home crowd! We started the day off as any championship begins and that is the multis! It takes a lot of heart and a lot of ibuprofen to be a multi! Sofia Iakushina, a freshman mid year transfer from Russia, kicked the day off with a monstrous performance in the pentathlon! 5 events and 5 PR'S! Yes a PR in every single one of them! This paved the way to a silver medal and the number 2 multi in the nation, only behind OU's Pippi Lotta-Enok! On the reverse side, we had Blake Harris in the men's heptathlon. He was up against Multi U, Arkansas who recently has been cranking at least 3-4 national qualifiers every year! But Harris had 4 season bests in 4 events and is off to his best start in a hep ever! He's more than a 100 points ahead of his last hep at this point!

One of the best moments of the day was our men's Distance Medley Relay winning its first ever SEC Title! With a spectacular time of 9:23, the quartet of Luca Santorum, Cutler Zamzow, Caden Norris, and Cooper Cawthra held off a late surge from Arkansas with Cawthra passing Olympian Yaseen Abdalla on the final lap to secure the gold for the Aggies! Our women's DMR of Elise Smoot, Kennedy Wade, Avery Perkins, and Debora Cherono placed 5th blowing away the competition in the slower heat.

On the field event side of things, we had the men and women's long jump, along with the men's pole vault! In maybe the stunner of the conference meet, was our NCAA Leader and school record holder Aleksandr Solovev not clearing a height in the pole vault. There was a long delay, as well as a lot of competitors so it took nearly 3 hour for him to make an attempt. He will surely bounce back for nationals! However, all was fine because we still scored more than the 10 we were projected! Jack Mann III matched his PB and earned a silver medal and Ryley Klefstad ties for 5th combining for 10.5 points! In the men's long jump, JUCO transfer Khybah Dawson led the way with a bronze medal jump and a jump that may have secured him a spot in nationals of 25'10.75! Mason Mangum placed 5th with a 25'3.25! Winny Bii placed 11th on the women's side.

Only a couple races were on the track today! One a lap long and the other 25 laps! The 200 and the 5000! We had no men in the 200, but Camryn Dickson ran a huge time of 22.91 to qualify with the second fastest time while Jasmine Montgomery qualified with the 8th fastest time! Both have times that in the mix for nationals! In the 5000, College Station High product and redshirt freshman led the way in 8th place scoring a point, while Kennady Fontenot placed 10th in a stacked field just off their PR's! On the men's side we didn't get points but saw Jack Johnston and Jonathan Chung placed 20th and 23rd!

Overall it was a great day for the Aggies. Our men are currently sitting in 1st with 30.5 points. Ahead of Tennessee - 21 points, Arkansas - 20, Alabama - 19, and Georgia - 17.5. Out women are in 4th with 13 points behind Arkansas in first followed by Oklahoma and LSU. Tomorrow everything on the track is a prelim, only points will be given in the Heptathlon so hopefully Blake Harris has a great second day! And the other field event finals will be in the weight throw and men's high jump where we're not expected to score. So hopefully Blake Harris mitigates what Arkansas scores in the Hep with Harris' points. So we may be sitting in 3rd after tomorrow. We have prelims in the 60, 60 hurdles, 400, 800, and 1600. The goal is to get as many Aggies into Saturdays finals that we can!
