General Preview

Howdy track fans, track enthusiasts, and people who may be interested in what track and field is all about! This is a little write up for SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Other sports may claim their conference owns the sport, but they all have to fall behind what the SEC is to college track and field! So I encourage all of you to head to RA Murray Fasken Indoor Track and Field Facility to cheer on our Ags and watch a world class track and field meet!

Our Aggie Men have a great shot at winning this meet. This meet is scores 1st - 8th place. First getting 10, second getting 8, then 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. So it's about scoring as much as you can in as many events as you can. Teams with all Americans may win nationals, but teams with depth win conference. Our men have some depth across multiple events! Thursday and Friday are all about getting as many athletes into Saturday's final while also scoring as much as we can in field events, multi events, and the 5000. The SEC is loaded with talent in every competition.

This will be a 3 day meet. A ticket from the link above gives you access to the entire meet! Thursday will be a great start. That's when the multi events begin. Indoors the women contest a pentathlon: 60 Hurdles, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, and the 800 meters. The men contest the Heptathlon: 60 Meters, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump during the first day, then 60 Hurdles, Pole Vault, and the 1000. We have some very talented multi athletes including: Sofia Iakushina, Blake Harris, and Madison Murray. We'll also see the men's pole vault Thursday, as well as the long jump for the men and women. Thursday will have two finals the 5000 meter run, yes 25 laps around an indoor track! As well as the Distance Medley Relay (DMR). This relay consists of 4 different relay legs, it starts with a 1200, 400, 800, and then a mile. The 5000 will be fun to watch and we'll have some great distance runners contesting it!

Friday will begin with the conclusion of the Heptathlon as well as prelims for many events including the 60, 60 Hurdles, 400, 800, and 1600. Some of the best athletes in the world contest these events so each one will be star studded. We have the best 400 men's group in the nation led by Auhmad Robinson, Antonio Nortje, Hossam Hatib, and Culter Zamzow. On the women's side we have Jermaisha Arnold, one of the nations best. We have two of the best 60 hurdlers in the nation, Jaiya Covington and Jaqualon Scott and a strong 800 group of Sam Whitmarsh, Kimar Farquharson, Caden Norris, and Grant Ashby. We also have some amazing milers like Debora Cherono, Elise Smoot, Cooper Cawthra, Luca Santorum, Gilbert Rono, and Diego Heredia.

Saturday is the big day! 3 straight hours of competitive and crazy finals that will possibly bring NCAA leading times or even NCAA records! Saturday will be crazy! Conference titles will be decided as well as team titles! Finals for every race 60-3000, and the meet concludes with the pinnacle of track and field. The 4x400! Where the Texas A&M men have the nation's leading time!

So even if you're not a crazy track fan, or even a casual track fan in the slightest. Attending this meet is so much fun! You're not only cheering on your amazing Texas A&M Track and Field athletes, but you're getting to watch some of the best track and field athletes in the entire world. I promise you it'll be worth the price of admission! The facility is beautiful, the environment is world class, and it's always great cheering on your fightin' Texas A&M Aggies.

Below I'll post a little preview of what to expect in every event. It's not extremely thorough, but a baseline for newcomers to follow as they get ready to cheer on our team!

Throughout the meet, I will be posting updates on each event! Can't wait to talk track with you all all weekend long!!

My first time to be in the new indoor stadium. Is parking at Reed Arena or is there parking at the indoor facility?

Here's some info on parking and the facility in general! There's no baseball so there will be parking at Olsen probably for a fee, as well as at Reed, and the West Campus Garage isn't too far of a walk!

we usually park at Reed, it has been free in the past. The Olsen field parking has been free lately when no baseball as well but that is usually full when I get there.

will be in top row of section 106 unless trying to get a better vantage of the jumps area.

60 Preview

Starting this event by event preview with the shortest races of them all, the sprints! In the 60, we have some insane talent in the conference. It's not one our strongest events and we'll need some huge PR's to score. Camryn Dickson will be our best chance at scoring here on the women's side, but she'll need a huge PR. On the women's side 2 LSU athletes are ranked first and second. It's gonna take a low 7.xx to win this event. On the men's side, blink and you'll miss the race. 9 guys have PR's under 7.60 so it's gonna be a wild final. Our best 60 runners are DeVante Mount, Keanu Jones, and Ernest Campbell.

200 Preview

While the 60 may be extremely tough to score in, the 200 provides more hope, although still a challenge. On the men's side Auhmad Robinson has one of the top times in the nation and conference. However, we'll probably only use him for the 400 and 4x400. Although the 200 prelim is a day earlier so there's a chance he doubles, but it's unlikely. There's also a rare world he only runs the 200 over the 400 so we can secure points there since we have depth in the 400. Mason Mangum, DeVante Mount, and Omarion Ferguson are other options here. On the women's side, Jasmine Montgomery, a transfer from Florida, has a very strong chance of scoring here and making nationals in the event. She comes in with the 3rd best time in the conference, while Camryn Dickson is 6th! Our women need points here

400 Preview

Now this is our strongest event on the guys side. We have lots of depth, but this race will be vital to whoever wins the team title. While we do have 4 in the top 9, Arkansas has 4 in the top 8, and 3 of them ranked higher than our second fastest. So while all of them might not run, they'll have a huge chance of scoring here unless we have a say in it. Florida's Jenoah McKiver is the odds on favorite based on this season. But our very own Auhmad Robinson could win the gold as well. We'll really need Antonie Nortje and Hossam Hatib to PR to ensure points and a spot at the national meet. A great time for Northe and Hatib will be close to 45.5! On the girls Jermaisha Arnold seems to be our only scoring threat. Latasha Smith, Kennedy Wade, and Yierra Flemings will most likely also be running this race. We need them in the 52's. Arnold could medal, but it's a loaded event!

800 Preview

This may be thee most important race of the weekend in terms of national qualifying spots. As of this week, we have no guys in the top 16. We have a talented group that when racing to their full potential can really do some damage here. Arkansas has 3 of the top 6 times. So if they control the 400 and 800, it could be an easy conference title for them. Our group of Kimar Farquharson, Sam Whitmarsh, Caden Norris, and Grant Ashby all have great Pr's and can push to get into the final! This may be a race where the prelim is harder than the final! Would love for a couple of us to get under 1:47, it's a tall order but not impossible! A fully healthy Whitmarsh can win this or podium at the very least. I expect a big race for Farquharson. We need some points here. I don't expect scoring on the women's side, we might only have Maddie Jones and Avery Perkins in the event, 2:10 would be a great race for them, the women's field is just loaded with all Americans and 6 razorbacks in the top ten lol.

1600 Preview

The miles always a fun race to follow! We currently have our two school record holders on each side! Debora Cherono and Cooper Cawthra. The women's field is a lot stronger than the men's. Cawthra has a really great shot at medaling and he's a great tactical racer. Cherono could make the final, I think she runs well this weekend! Santorum, Rono, and Heredia could potentially go sub 4 and that could put them into position to make the final. The mile prelims aren't usually barn burners, so tactical racing and positioning is key. Elise Smoot need to get in the low 4:40's and she's been racing the best of her life this season. I'm not sure if we see Avery Perkins in this race or the 800, but she's been great as well.

3000/5000 Preview

I figured I'd combine these two as most of the same people will be racing in both. Although more will be running the 3000. They usually split this up into 2 heats, one smaller heat with the fastest PR's and then like 30+ in the other. Zack Munger and Megan Roberts could in the fast heat, but the SEC is so strong in the 3000. The 5000 is usually less of a crowded field. On the women's side Megan Roberts and Kennady Fontenot both have great scoring potential and have been racing phenomenally all indoor season. Jack Johnston, Jonathan Chung, Munger and Carter Gordy can fight to score on the men's side. Distance is usually very strategic, some athletes are saving their legs for nationals, some may also be running the DMR, while some may only run one distance event. McRaven does a great job having our distance group perform well at big meets so I expect some points here, even with such a loaded conference.

60 Hurdles Preview

This race should be very beneficial to us adding much needed too heavy points. We have Jaiya Covington on the women's side who's one of the best in the nation. She can run nearly 8 seconds flat in this race. It'll be nice to see her dip below that to win the meet and get 10 points! We'll have a great race on the men's side with Ja'Qualon Scott going head to head with Auburn's Jakobe Tharp. Whoever Pr's in this final will win. Both men and women are loaded in this event and it'll be a fun one to watch!

Pentathlon Preview

The first event to finalize in this conference meet and it's one of my favorite track events. Leading the way is another Russian athlete Sofia Iakushina. She currently sits second in the conference and top 6 nationally as a freshman. In an event usually dominated by upperclassmen, she's made her mark as a freshman who enrolled into A&M less than 2 months ago. She is a well rounded multi. Her strengths are the long jump, 800, and the hurdles. She will do great there, but to increase her score we need to see how she does in the shot put and high jump! Along side her we have Vanderbilt transfer Madison Murray who has scored in this event before. Right now she sits in 9th so a PR would almost guarantee her a scoring spot. We also have redshirt freshman Rylee Lydon who was the top high school multi athlete 2 years ago, but suffered a torn Achilles right before competition last year. She'll be great soon, but she's still recovering from that injury. Iakushina will be fighting for positioning on the podium with Pippi Lotta Enok of OU and Ella Rush of Georgia.

Heptathlon Preview

We'll only have one athlete for us on the men's side of the multi events, and that is Blake Harris. Harris has had a tremendous year and sits just outside the top 25 nationally in this event and 5th in the conference. He's gotten exponentially better each year at this event. His strength is his speed and unfortunately there's not many events for him to showcase his speed indoors aside from the 60 and 60 hurdles. Those two will definitely help his chances to fight for a podium spot. We really need to see how he does in the long jump and high jump! I don't expect to see the nations leader Peyton Bair in this event so that makes it easier for Harris to medal.

Field Event Preview

Pole Vault Preview

This has always been a great event to watch, but now the price of admission allows you to witness the NCAA leader and the fabulous freshman Aggie from Russia, Aleksandr Solovev. He can go over 19 feet. Not sure if he'll go chasing a PR or settle comfortably in with the win! But this event Thursday should give us 10 early points. Jack Mann III, Leo Bowen, and Ryley Klefstad all have a chance at scoring as well! We'll need more jumps closer to 17'6. On the women's side we have Heather Abadie who is ranked 5th in the conference and just off the national qualifier list. So she'll need a PR as well! A slight PR and she medals but maybe even a jump close to her Pr is enough to medal. However this event is all about misses and at what height you decide to enter the competition at.

Long Jump Preview

This is another event where we have a solid group on the men's side, however, the conference is insanely loaded in this event. We do have jumpers ranked 7th, 9th, and 11th. So all can fight for a spot in the finals, but they'll need to be at their absolute best and get one huge jump in the prelims! With some PR's they can fight to get a national spot as well! The closer to 26 feet, the better! We aren't very strong on the women's side, triple jumper Winny Bii has the best shot at making a final, as does multi Sofia Iakushina, but she probably won't contest the event due to it being directly after the pentathlon.

Triple Jump Preview

As mentioned above, this event is all about Winny Bii! She's currently leading the nation in the event with a leap of 45'11'75. Leading the nation by a centimeter lol. We also have Victoria Kadiri, who at her best can get a spot in the final, but she hasn't hit her peak this indoor season. Jade Johnson and Alyssa Rodriguez should also be competing for us as well, both talented jumpers! On the men's side, transfer Gavin Champ has lived up this surname and elevated his performance to an elite level this season. His huge performance has most likely earned him a spot at nationals and a great shot at making the finals in this event at conference. Although it's loaded, he can fight for the podium. Behind him is fantastic freshman Jaydon Shield who has been getting better and better every meet.

High Jump Preview

Although we have scored here in the past. The conference hasn't been great in this event, but it's loaded now. It all comes down to misses and makes and on any given day, an elite athlete can have 3 bad attempts. Carter Bajoit has a chance to medal, but he's been very far off from his best. It'll take a great performance for him to score. We were blessed with great women high jumpers in the past, but Lamara Distin is out of eligibility. We have Milena Chevallier who has a chance at scoring as well, but she may need a PR to do so. The women's event will be a fun one to watch with Olympian Elena Kulichenko of Georgia.

Shot Put / Weight Throw Preview

Although this is taylorswift13's coaching specialty, the Ags won't have scoring in this event. We don't have any Ags competing and our closest to making a final is Carlie Weiser who's ranked 14th. This is a strong event for the SEC so we won't be a factor in these events. Carlie Weiser threw 53 in high school, so the potential for a huge throw is there, but you have to be at least at 55/56 to score in this event. The guys only have one thrower, Ethan Sanders, but his speciality is the discus where he should be a national qualifier easily. Ole Miss' Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan is a Bowerman contender and one of, if not, the nations best in the shot put and weight throw.

4x400 Preview

Now this is the last race of the meet and the race that gets everyone up on their feet. Our men are currently leading the nation in the 4x400. However there's no room to breathe with Florida and Arkansas right behind. We've run multiple quartets out there but we'll most likely see Auhmad Robinson - Hossam Hatib - Antonie Nortje - and Cutler Zamzow. Jaqualon Scott, Kimar Farquharson, and Eric Hemphill are also strong options. This event alone is worth attending this meet. Although our women have always been in contention to win or at least podium, we don't have that strong of a group this year. they're currently sitting in 7th in the conference so they won't be in the fastest heat. Our group usually consists of Jermaisha Arnold, Latasha Smith, Kennedy Wade, and either Montgomery or Dickson. I can also see Yierra Flemings in the relay as well. She started out slow, but has been running extremely well as of late! She will be more of a 400 hurdler specialist, but get used to seeing her on our relay! However, asking Montgomery and Dickson to run a 60, possibly multiple 200 races, then a 400 will be a tall task! Our women have been bumped out of a spot for nationals in this race, a rarity in Pat Henry's tenure. So they'll need to run a huge PR south of 3:30.

DMR Preview

It'll almost be impossible to top what our men accomplished this past weekend in this event. The group of Santorum, Zamzow, Farquharson, and Cawthra broke the school record in the DMR and have a standing for nationals at the moment. Now it'll be hard to ask some of these guys to run this race along with multiple other races, so we may throw a different group out there. DMR's at conference are usually more about placing rather than chasing a PR for nationals. We have lots of options to run this event so it'll be interesting to see who we put on each leg. Our depth may help us here. On the women's side, we won't have a national time. Having Cherono anchor this will be beneficial, but we may need her more for the individual mile. Asking her to run 3 miles in a weekend is crazy. Perkins, Jones, Wade, Smoot Austin Owens are options here. It'll be impossible to predict a lineup, but fun nonetheless!

Lots of words I know so I apologize in advance, I'm just excited about this meet lol! Later on I'll work on little previews or snippets into some rosters and strenghts of other teams in the conference that will be a factor into the team title. Teams like Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, tu, and others!!

And this is without seeing who's competing in what events, when the start lists are published I'll post them here and break down that as well!!

Heat sheets in regular season meets are usually determined by your seeded time or mark. So the fastest will race together. In a conference meet or national meet they are mostly randomized. So where one falls in the heat sheets can play a big factor on advancing to finals. On an indoor track, the 200 and 400 are impacted the most on lane assignments because the inside lanes have a tighter curve to maneuver.

Entries are up! They can be scheduled to change but this should be very accurate to who's competing! No glaring omissions, other than the fact that we have no guys entered in the 200. We're going all out in the 400, it'll be the Aggies vs the Razorbacks. The 400 leader Jenoah McKiver won't be running the 400. Blake Harris looks to be in good position to medal. Field events will be loaded.

On the women's side Adaejah Hodge, an Olympic sprinter will be making her debut for Georgia. But some of the top girl sprinters pulled out of the 200, Montgomery and Dickson should make the finals.

Our relay pool members are as follows

4x400
Men: Kimar Farquharson, Hossam Hatib, Antonie Nortje, Auhmad Robinson, Cutler Zamzow, Jaqualon Scott

Women: Jermaisha Arnold, Camryn Dickson, Yierra Flemings, Latasha Smith, Jasmine Montgomery, Kennedy Wade

DMR
Men: Luca Santorum, Caden Norris, Cutler Zamzow, Ondrej Gajdos, Diego Heredia, Cooper Cawthra, Gilbert Rono, Sam Whitmarsh,

Women: Elise Smoot, Kennedy Wade, Avery Perkins, Debora Cherono, Emma Little

Arkansas looks like they'll attempt to get a national time in the DMR, they have their top miler, their top 800 runner, and one of their top 400 runners listed. If they run faster than our DMR did last week they can earn that national spot and bump us to 11th. I'll keep a close eye on DMR's throughout each conference meet!

When I was coaching football every football player had to run track. Even if he was a 280 pound lineman. Even if they chose not to run in meets they had to get a track workout in. Off-season workouts and track are the keys to being a quality athlete. If you have a young athlete no matter what the sport I would highly recommend getting them into a summer track program.

Agree with every word! I played football and threw shot and discus and now I specialize in coaching the throws. It blows my mind when football players think track is a waste of time, but it's no coincidence the players in the fall ran track in the spring! Even for lineman, lineman who throw get to work on balance, core, explosiveness, and quick footwork!

Running for LSU will be Jelani Watkins, a receiver for them! Ran on Atascocita's relays! Jordan Anthony, is a receiver for them and their best sprinter!

. I agree 100%. The starts, and other things you mentioned in your post in the running events and the footwork, coordination, timing, explosion etc in the weight events are priceless for a football player. Or any athlete no matter the sport. The athletes do not get a choice at our school. You are in the track program.

Maybe we have Gilbert Rono or Grant Ashby run the 800? So we have Kimar, Sam, and Caden fresh for the 800 prelims! Maybe Gajdos or Heredia anchor, with someone like Bryce McCray or Demarco Escobar or Eric Hemphill running the 400. This would be optimal to have our individual entires rest for their races!! I have no clue what we would run. Doesn't seem like other schools aside from Arkansas will be aiming for a 9:20! It'll be fun to follow!
