Obviously this is without Sam Whitmarsh in the 800 and without Arkansas and Washington doing a DMR. Getting some points in the 800 would really help, as well as winning the 4x400 where we currently have the 3rd best time. I also think we could see Jaqualon Scott improve his hurdle time. He ran that time with a rough start. So him scoring more would help! USC will be relying on a couple sprinters and hurdlers, and a jumper, similar make up as Tech. Washington is relying on distance, as is Arkansas, but Arkansas has a few jumpers and multi eventers. This is gonna be a fun race. The points will sort itself out, it's a whole different animal competing on the highest stage when it matters the most. Right now is trying to get as many as we can into the top 16.

Cooper Cawthra's indoor mile time of 3:54.38 ranks 123rd ALL-TIME in world history according to the World Athletics Website. Looks like he's just outside the NCAA all-time top 25, but man what a performance! Crazy to have a 3:54 in the Texas A&M record book!

The distance has really taken off the past few years... in 2021, 3:54.38 would have been 61st all-time and even in 2023 he would've been 72nd all-time. Obviously things are a little different these days as he "only" ranks 14th in the current NCAA standings, but I don't want the current playing field to take away from an amazing accomplishment like his! Gig 'em Cooper!!

So what has caused the drastic improvements of times in the middle distance and distance? Training techniques, nutrition, equipment? Just curious as where is the point where its starts not progressing ras so fast or reaches a threshold with time improvements. I think about this each time a WR is broken in sports like track and swimming.

I'd say all of the above, there's a lot of research on the newest Nike track shoes that have a carbon fiber plate that make it easier to train as well! Also part of it could be the newest track surfaces that are softer and bouncier.

Cooper Cawthra's improvement is nothing short of amazing! I bet he can go under 3:40 easily outdoors in the 1500 and closer to 3:35! I was worried about him after he missed cross country due to injury, but the time off served him well!! He is sensational!

I have done research on the shoes and I agree. The carbon fiber plate makes a difference. Thanks for your response, ready for Saturday already!

That's a great question, and one that I don't have a definite answer to...
My thoughts are that the carbon fiber plated shoes, or "supershoes", are the main factor, but I also agree with what I've heard from others that the covid lockdown provided athletes everywhere with a full year to train without the worry of racing. Now I'm not sure how much of what we're seeing today is a result of that, but I think that the drastic improvements are a result of: the two things mentioned above (supershoes and the lockdown), the advancement of other equipment technologies (such as track materials - the BU track is known for being bouncy), and also the mental barrier that continues to get lower and lower as athletes see more and more of their peers running these fast times. Sub-4 used to be THE thing to do as a miler, but now it's not unusual to see five high schoolers break the time barrier every year!
All that to say, there are a lot of factors that we know of, and probably a lot that we don't know of right now. But regardless, 3:54 especially is a mark to be proud of. Cooper has continued to progress every year from his HS time of 4:15(ish?) and has now solidified himself as the best miler in school history, and one of the best milers in the nation, as well as all-time!

In response to Cooper being able to go 3:35 in the 1500m, I absolutely love the optimism and am definitely rooting for that to happen! If I remember correctly, Cooper passed the 1500m mark in ~3:38 this past weekend!
That being said, we should just take this time to congratulate and appreciate this performance! If for any reason he doesn't hit those marks come June, we shouldn't be disappointed because of our already high expectations for him, or anyone! I think that he is positioning himself to be in the mix for a fast time, and I'm super hyped for that, but for now let's just celebrate what Cooper has done, rather than immediately look towards the future!

Yeah that was crazy, he went 7:30 in the 3000 also which is insane! Was a 4:10 miler in high school!
