The more I think about it, the more I believe that Jim Nill is one of the best GMs across sports over the past 5-10 years. I know we haven't won a cup in his time here (yet), but what he has done since he got here in setting up this team to be very competitive for an extended period of time is pretty remarkable. The way he has layered old vets, mid-20s superstars, and high level upside youth is a masterclass in team building and salary cap management. I am not sure there's a better GM in sports at managing the cap than Nill. He's been "moving" Stankoven up and down from the AHL roster since he's been called up to maximize the amount of cap that we are accruing etc. So hats off to Jim Nill and I hope he decides to end his career with the Stars and that he has groomed someone for this job once he decides to hang it up.
With that being said, Hanley being waived means that he'll likely go down to the Texas Stars and help them out (they really need it right now), but how are we going to handle the third pair on D moving forward? I would like it to be Suter and Lundqvist unless they trade for another guy, but I really have a feeling we're going to see Suter and Hakanpaa barring something like a trade or an injury. I just don't think this organization and coaching staff trusts Lundqvist at all, ESPECIALLY going into the playoffs.
