100 NCAA WEST PREVIEW

It's been a while since we've had numbers in this event but this year we have 3 Aggies competing in the men's 100 at the national prelims! The NCAA has been relatively weak depth wise in this event this season but is really top heavy! The fastest time in the west heading into the prelims is Shawn Maswanganyi of Houston with a 9.87.

Emmanuel Yeboah the JUCO transfer started the season a little slowly but has put together some impressive performance! He is ranked 10th with a 10.17 and I think he still has a better time in him! I feel the 10.15-10.20 range will be what it takes to place top 12! Ryan Martin is another who has been exploding lately and really coming in to his own! He is ranked 19th with a 10.23! Yeboah is the better starter, but Martin has better top end speed! With a time of 10.30 Devon Achane is ranked 27th but has only ran the 100 once with legal wins! I believe he has 10.18 speed maybe faster if he gets a good start!

Advancing one of the guys would be huge, heck even 2 is a possibility. But it will be really difficult for them to score at nationals so maybe it could be best if they rest for the relay!

On the women's side, USC will try to dominate but I hope not! Twanisha "Tee Tee" Terry. She finished 2nd nationally in the 60 and 3rd in 2019 outdoors! Kemba Nelson of Oregon will make it a great contest followed by Arkansas girls ariana Wilson and Jada Baylark!

We have one girl competing in Zhane Smith who's ranked 27th! She made the finals in the SEC meet and I think she can continue to PR! Immanuela Aliu was not submitted to be considered, but she is in the relay pool!

BREAKING: Anna Hall of Georgia will not be competing in the heptathlon at the NCAA outdoor championships! She is probably preserving her legs and not wanting to do back to back heptathlons in two weeks! But this opens up the door for Tyra to walk to a championship even on a bad day!

She is declared in the high jump and long jump in the East Regionals next week

I saw that to make sure, I also checked to see if Jasmine Moore was skipping out also but nope lol! The US Olympic Trials being a week after probably went into that decision! Having to do 3 heps in 4 weeks would be rough! I feel she has a shot at the Olympic team!

Nice analysis of the 100m.
All I would add is that I still believe the 100m spots are still wide open.
For the men, 18 of the top 24 men declared times are wind aided between 2.1 and 4.0 wind speed
For the women about 1/2 of the top 24 times are also wind aided
So on the day anything could happen.
I do hope the Aggies take advantage of our home track and do very well

I don't think Hall has a realistic shot. She not only does she need a Top 3 finish, she doesn't have the Olympic standard and isn't ranked in the following group of athletes next up for spots. Bougard and Williams are the class of US hept and the remaining spot will have fierce competition - Kunz, Brooks, Zamzow-Mahler, Hawkins, etc. (disclaimer don't know if they're all registered to compete). I think in 3 yrs she has a great shot though.

Anyway, back to Prelims talk.

Yeah I agree! I'll be following that completely as it sets to be a great competition! Her inexperience might get her, but she has shot at third! Zamzow has not looked great since college and I'd take Hall over Hawkins, but Brooks is who is put my money on, she's just a world class sprinter! Hall is a beast who's always been stuck behind Tyra, and Hall has huge PB's that she hasn't hit in competition such as the javelin, long jump, and 800! It will be fun to follow for sure! Also great points in the 100, the margin for error in the rankings is so vast anyone can take it! I'm hoping we can qualify a couple!

200 METER NCAA WEST PREVIEW

This event could set us up nicely at nationals! Although it's a very tough year in this race we have some athletes who can provide a little scoring if they run their best race! We have two qualifiers in the men's Devon Achane and Lance Broome and on the women's side we have Laila Owens. All 3 have won the UIL 200 Meter Title and all 3 are from the Houston Area and all 3 are outdoor freshman for the Aggies!

On the men's side thankfully we don't have to get through Laird, Boling, Fahnbulleh, and Lang. But Shawn Maswanganyi of Houston leads the pack with a crazy 19.93. Achane sits in 3rd with his 20.31 but was dealing with a hamstring issue the past couple of weeks! Hopefully he's healthy to run! Lance Broome is ranked 17th with his 20.66 but I believe he has a huge run in him! Broome has been steadily improving and should be below 20.5 along with Achane! That has a good shot of getting them through but like Triniaggie said the times recorded are all crazy and some are wind aided where others might be not! If Achane can advance through and with another 2 weeks to heal he definitely has a shot at nationals! Both Broome and Achane are on our sprint relay and ran great legs last week! Fun fact 8 of the top 9 times in the region are from Texas colleges! So expect a lot of our regional rivals to be in the mix as well! We also learned last week how important lane draw is on our wide curved track so running a good time in the prelims would be ideal!

On the women's side we have freshman Laila Owens! She's currently ranked 20th but she was dealing with a minor injury during the middle of the season and has only run 400's since, expect her to possibly beat her seeded time of 23.21! USC and Texas both will have 3 girls in the mix but if Laila can drop to a sub 23.1 she has a shot at getting to nationals! 400/800 previews coming tomorrow

400 METER NCAA WEST PREVIEW

Get your popcorn ready for this race folks! On the men's side there won't be that much drama and entertainment, but on the women's side... you're going to want to go rent an apartment at Park West or the Callaway House across the street to get a view of this race! Historically this has always been an event where the Ags shine and this year is no different! On the women's side this will be a classic cutthroat competition between Texas A&M vs USC. The objective is to see who can qualify more girls. USC is entering 7 girls in this event and we enter 5! USC has girls ranked, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 13th. So we need our girls to step up and disrupt USC's chances because the event will be a huge point getter at nationals for both teams who have a championship on the line!

We are led by the fabulous, world class, Athing Mu who has a time of 49.84! Mu can go faster, I think in the 49.5 range but that won't be necessary next week as she can just cruise to a 50 and advance. There are Ags behind her as freshman Charokee Young is ranked 7th with a 51.46! Charokee did look better indoors but her big race is coming, I would not bet against her and I think she drops into the low 51's to qualify! Next is the important Tierra Robinson-Jones who is ranked 10th with a 51.94! On her leg in the 4x4 she was in the mid 51's when I glanced up at the clock and it would be huge if she were to qualify as well. Also running is Syaira Richardson who is ranked 16th with a 52.42, although that time was in early April and she has not ran since! She has low 51 potential but the question mark is her health. If the Ags can get 3 girls to nationals that would be huge, but 4 OH MY GOODNESS. And it is possible. Also running is Senior Jaevin Reed who is ranked 34th with a 53.44. She has put together great splits on a relay but not in the open race, hopefully that changes! I think we can advance 3, I just hope Richardson is healthy so possibly we can advance 4!

We are a little weaker depth wise on the men's side but it will continue to be the Bryce Deadmon show. He is currently ranked 1st in the West with a time of 44.50 over 1.5 second ahead of 13th! So Bryce does not need to exert himself so much. Although we had 4 others with qualifying times, only one will race the 400 and that is freshman and the 2019 UIL 6A 400 Championship Omajuwa Etiwe! He is ranked 30th with a 46.61. Although he did split a 45.9 on the relay! Deadmon should and has to qualify to score for us at nationals!

Current Flotrack Team Rankings based on national meet scoring. They have Acquah in 6th in the long jump and 4th in triple jump, as well as Lamara 5th in the high jump, and Charokee 8th in the 400! Which all can be argued to be ranked higher. They also have LSU's pole vaulter winning it all even after she got 3rd in conference... Our men seem to be in a good spot as well! But then again all rankings have a little bias in them...

800 METER NCAA WEST PREVIEW

#800METERU! That's our name for a reason! Although Athing Mu will not be competing in the race, we will be loaded on our men's side! Overall on both sides this 800 field is as deep as I can ever remember! 9 women this year have gone under 2:02 led by Athing Mu's 1:57! And on the men's side 12 have gone under 1:47 led by USC's Isaiah Jewett 1:45.16.

Leading the Ags in the west preliminary meet is SEC Champion and Freshman Brandon Miller who is 3rd in the nation and 2nd in the west with a 1:45.95! There is a deep field of athletes all within tenths of each other as Carlton Orange is ranked 20th with a 1:48.40 and Devin Dixon is ranked 27th with a 1:48.97. Their PR's would have them ranked 6th and 1st respectively! We know Devin Dixon has not looked like his old self, but he has steadily been improving each week and I hope him and Carlton Orange can positions themselves well. This 800 should be very tactical so expect our guys to run together and run strategically! Miller should advance easily and we'll have to see which version we get of Dixon/Orange. A low to mid 1:47 should be enough to advance so let's hope we can get 2-3 to advance! Oregon will have two top runners in this race and Iowa State should have 3/4 in the mix as well!

No Ags will be competing on the women's side as Athing Mu would help us best national championship wise if she runs the 400! But it will still be a great field led by indoor National Champion Aaliyah Miller of Baylor. It should still be a fun race that should have the top 12 go under 2:06 including 3 BYU girls who have ran fast times and Shafiqua Maloney of Arkansas!

Thanks for sharing. Fred looks like he is in great shape. It looks like he dropped a bit of the upper body bulk he has carried for the past few years. Is it possible he will try to qualify to make the national team in the 100 and 400 at the Olympics, or is he working on his top end speed to sharpen his 400?
taylorswift13
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That is true, he does look slimmer but I think he's focused on the 400! He's been posting his famous hashtag #phase42 meaning he wants to sub 43 in the 400! He already has the olympic standard and trials qualifier so he's been working on speed. At the 2019 championships he lost in the last part of the race so maybe he's been working on his speed so he has a better finish! I really want to see him medal in Tokyo and on a winning relay

1500 METER NCAA WEST PREVIEW

SADLY, no Ags in either side of this race but I'll give a little preview for those still watching. I believe we would have seen Jon Bishop but he may have been injured this spring! On the men's side it'll be a west coast showdown led by Oregon's Cole Hocker, Washington's Sam Tanner and a couple of BYU runners. This event is deeper than it's been in recent years, most distance races are crazy competitive this year! Most distance races are tactical at this stage but the 1500 may be an exception as these guys will fighting for only 12 spots! Expect some good races, with the qualifying times below 3:40.

On the women's side, Arkansas will try to break through the strong west coast showing but the field will be led by a fantastic runner Sage Hurta of Colorado! She should lead every race she's in and should be followed by Arkansas girls led by Kristen Gear, Carina Viljoen, Isabel Van Camp, and Kennedy Thompson. And a BYU contingent of Whittni Orton, Olivia Hoj, and Anna Camp, along with Stanford's Ella Donaghu. The top 12 should be around 4:14!

3000 METER STEEPLECHASE NCAA WEST PREVIEW

Again, sadly no aggies in this race as well as it was a crazy competitive year in the distance events. But it should be a great race on both sides. The men's will be led by Ryan Smeeton of Oklahoma State with a time of 8:33, but the BYU guys will be coming in hard. along with David Too of Iowa State.

The women's side will be way more competitive led by one of the nations best Courtney Wayment who dropped a crazy time of 9:31 in her first steeple race since 2017. Oregon's Aneta Konieczek is ranked 2nd with a 9:38, but surprisingly Krissy Gear scratched from this race. Adva Cohen of New Mexico and Katie Rainsberger of Washington will put on a show too! Expect these steeples to be strategic with very strong kicks at the end!!

5000 METER NCAA WEST PREVIEW

Again no Ags here either but like the SEC meet (for those that didn't get up to get popcorn during this race) the 5k will be great to watch! And besides the women's 400 and women's high jump, to me the men's 5k will be the most competitive event. This is the deepest this event has been, maybe in history. 31 men have gone under 13:40 and 17 on the west have. Cooper Teare of Oregon leads the NCAA and the west with a crazy time of 13:19 followed by his teammate Cole Hocker at 13:20. The usual company of BYU, Stanford, NAU, Colorado, and Arkansas will contest the top 12 as well. The 5k will usually be strategic, but Wesley Kiptoo of Iowa State will say otherwise. He's the runner who at indoor nationals in the 5k was lapping people at a national meet lol. Either way if it's Teare/Hocker, Kiptoo, Nico Young of NAU, or Eduardo Herrera of Colorado... it's going to be a phenomenal race that I recommend tuning into!

On the women's side it'll be all Whittni Orton of BYU who will lead from start to finish followed Ella Donaghue of Stanford and her teammate Julia Heymach. Don't expect the Arkansas show here folks as Katie Izzo and crew will be fighting just to earn a top 12 spot. Like all distance races, they will be anyone's game as they are mostly tactical as these girls are fighting for a top 12 position. So it'll be fun and suspenseful to watch, even though watching a long race might bore some people.

10000 METER NCAA WEST PREVIEW

I might be the only casual fan besides distance runners and the parents of distance runners THATS at the edge of their seats for a 10k, but these will be interesting races as well. So if the number 10,000 didn't put you to sleep, stay with me here and I'll briefly try to get you excited for this race lol.

On the men's side, it's the same long distance schools as always with BYU, NAU, Stanford, and Iowa State will be near the top. Led by Connor Mantz the NCAA favorite of BYU with a time of 27:41, Abdimahid Nur of NAU, and of course Wesley Kiptoo of Iowa State. It is a deep field as all 48 guys are under 29:10. History says this will be a strategic race but Wesley Kiptoo will say otherwise. The race will become who decided to stay with him and who runs patiently, and if patience can hurt their cause at a top 12 spot.

On the women's side, as she will lead from the gun, Grace Forbes a freshman from Rice will set the tone and dominate the race. As she lapped everyone in her conference meet she would be encouraging the other girls throughout the race lol. You can't miss the red head from Rice, and she will be followed by Oregon's Carmela Baez and a contingent of other west coast runners. And for those of us who hate wake up every morning with hatred towards Arkansas' distance program for what they did to us at nationals... they'll only have Katie Izzo in the mix and there's a strong possibility she won't get through

Sorry for the previews on the distance events, I know not many care about these events and no Ags will be running in them, but I tried to offer a "beginners" preview of them for anyone interested in watching these races (that will be interrupted by commercials). Still have the hurdles, relays, and field events to get to by Wednesday afternoon!

Thank you! And yeah I think us going after Annie Fuller was a step in the right direction... even though her time off made her lose a step from where she was at Michigan State. I think we have the scholarship money to find some distance transfers. Or hopefully Casarez can take a big step forward after a rough 2021. Lol hopefully some of these west coast guys can fall in love with our facilities and the Texas weather this week!
