In College Station. Women are the 2x defending champs, men looking for big improvement on last year's 7th place finish.

No psych sheet yet but here is meet schedule. Sunday finals will be broadcast live on the SEC Network, rest of the meet should be online on Watch ESPN or SEC+.

Bryl Gastaldello has not swum for the Aggies since the start of 2018.
She is now not listed to compete in any events at the SEC championship.
This is a big loss if she is not competing. Whatever the reason, I hope she can swim at NCAA's

Big time time trial swim for Jonathan Tybur in 200 breast. 1:53.31, 4th in the nation and locks up his NCAA championship spot.

Women off to a solid start on 1m, with 8th, 11th and 23rd in prelims. Charlye Campbell will dive in finals. Main competition in Georgia and Tennessee did not score nearly as well.

Men's 3m prelims start at 2pm, Henschel, Lake, Mathews and Thornton all entered.

108 point lead for the women after day 2. Men are in 3rd, just 2 points behind Tenessee for 2nd and 23 points of out first.

School, pool and SEC meet record for Sydney Pickrem in winning the 2IM - 1:52.69, fastest time in the country.

School record for Brock Bonetti, 1:42.32 in the 2IM. Austin Van Overdam with a 1:43.54 in the B final which should get him to the NCAA meet.

Caleb Dressel set an American record tonight in the 200IM.

Dude is a freak. Not sure what's has happened to our women's program though.

This was posted on swimswam blog today. A&M is not saying much about Beryl only "health concerns" and not sure she will be available for NCAAs. What a huge loss if true?

Maybe if that's all they are willing to say then we should be respectful of the swimmers privacy

Women increased their lead to almost 200 points over Tennessee and Georgia. School record, pool record for Sydney Pickrem to win the 4IM, 1-2 sweep with Galat. SEC title for Claire Rasmus in the 200 free.

Men are in second place, 68 points behind Florida. 2-3 finish in the 100 fly for Mauro Castillo and Angel Martinez, another drop in the 4IM school record for Austin Van Overdam. It's amazing to watch how far this team has come, they're swinging with the big boys now.

Women are going to win their 3rd straight championship, the 200 breaststroke alone will put this out of reach.

The real question is can the men hold on for a second place finish. It's a landmark moment for the program along with the dual meet win over tu. Couple that with the fact that 2 incoming freshmen won Texas 6A state titles today, another won 2 5A titles, and the entire class was all over the finals results and the future is brighter than ever for the guys.

What has changed it for A&M?

Seems like a few years ago is lack of Diving, and that appears to be doing well. 220 pts if I added it up correctly.

IIRC, a few years ago, there was mention of lack of being fully funded and a lack of depth based on ability to support a larger team (lack of financial support). Having trainers, travel costs, etc.

I think there were some injuries in years past, as well.

There was lots of confidence given on this board towards Coach Holmes and everything seems to be coming together.

We seem to have a larger team than I recall. We have 29 listed on the men's team (on meet mobile) and there are 27 listed from 2017. I thought we had 23-25 in the past.

Are we getting faster swimmers now in the SEC? Not sure how they compare to the Sips. With only WV, TCU and the Sips having teams in the BigXII, is that having an impact?

Last question... I think our summer camps have really improved and that could be getting swimmers to campus earlier for recruiting.

Observing from afar, it looks to me like the program was sliding into oblivion. Then assistant coach Jason Calanog was hired 3 years ago and the program began rising quickly and is now knocking on the door of Top 10. You do the math.
halco87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Jay Holmes is a great man and a very good swimming coach. Jason Calanog has changed the culture to believing they can win SECs and someday NCAAs. It's seems weird, but it is almost that simple.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looks like we have dual confirmation.

Sometimes it really is that simple. I tell my boys all the time... the mental aspect of things play a more significant role than many recognize.

Our HS got a new swimmer and a new Asst coach this past season and it elevated everyone's performance. Even our HC was infected.

I think the Pac12 swims their champs this week.

This past week were: SEC, BiG and ACC.

With only 3 Mens teams (Sips, TCU, WV) in the BXII, it is really more of an anointing or coronation, than meet.

How does qualification work. Best I could read is an "A" time auto-qualifies a swimmer who can then swim upto 3 events total with a "B" or better time.

On the Women's side... very impressive
Gastaldello: 50Fr
Bratton: 100Bk
Belousova: 100 Br, 200 Br
Pickrem: 200 Br, 400IM
Galat, 200 Br, 400 IM
Gonzalez Medina: 200 Br

4 of 8 in 200Br (1, 3, 4, 7)
2 of 6 in 400IM (1, 5)

Quick glance on the relays... all (womens) qualified. Obviously the Pac12's Champs will affect seeds, but this should be a very exciting meet for the Ags.
halco87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Men's ACC is still to swim. Pac 12 men and women are split, women this week then men I believe.

Without getting too far into it, they all a certain number of total swimmers into each meet. Last few years it has been around 38 or 39 women per event and 29 or 30 men. Since you can only swim up to 3 individual events there will be people inside these number who scratch and move others into selection spots. Once selected in any event you came swim up to 3 individual total as long as you have a B cut.

Right now the women most likely have the following women qualified either with A cuts or with probably a fast enough time to make it under that 38/39 cutoff area in at least 1 event.

Belousova - A cut 100/200 breast
Bratton - A cut 100/200 back
Caneta - 100/200 breast
DeBever - 200 IM
Galat - A cut 200 breast/400 IM
Gastaldello - A cut 50
Gonzalez-Hermosillo - 400 IM
Gonzalez Medina - A cut 200 breast
Malone - 200 IM/100 Free
Pickrem - A cut 200/400 IM 200 breast
Pike - 200 fly
Portz - 200 free
Quah - A cut 200 fly
Rasmus - 100/200/500 free

Yelle will be close to the cutoff line with her mile time.

For the men and the 29/30 line:
Bonetti - 100/200 back 200 IM 200 fly
Castillo Luna - A cut 200 breast
Kim - 200 back
Martinez - 100/200 fly
Olson - 200 breast
Tybur - 200 breast
Van Overdam - 200/400 IM

Walker will be close to the line in the 400 IM

Men will travel to Austin the following weekend, Thursday through Saturday for their last chance. That weekend ends the qualifying period for men's NCAA's.
